Characteristics of Life What makes something alive? ? ?
These are the official Characteristics of life: n n n n *Organization *Homeostasis/Regulation *Reproduction *Cellular Respiration(energy) *Growth *Development *Adaptation & Evolution Respond to stimulus
1. Organization - a high degree of order All living organisms are made up of one or more cells. (Unicellular or Multicellular)
ORGANIZATION n All living things show orderly structure or organization
Levels of Organization Atoms n Smallest particle of an element with the properties of that element.
Levels of organization Molecules n Two or more atoms bonded together
Levels of organization Organelle n Structures inside eukaryote cells that perform specific functions
Levels of organization - Cell n Smallest Unit of Life
Levels of organization - Tissues n Group of similar cells that perform a specific function.
Levels of organization - Organ n Structure composed of several tissues that forms a specific function.
Levels of organization Organ System n Circulatory system
Organism - Multicellular
Levels of Organization
Levels of Organization Number 1 -8 & put in order according to size. organism atom organ system tissue 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Atom Molecule organelle Cell Tissue Organ system organism cell molecule organelle
A response to maintain stability, or homeostasis (internal balance).
Maintaining Homeostasis n n n thirsty - drink water body temp. at 98. 6 p. H electrolytes micro & macro excretion
2. Reproduction Asexual one parent n Sexual two parents n This is the only life process that individuals do not need to survive. Reproduction is essential for the continuation of the organism’s species. Species - a group of organisms that can interbred & produce a fertile offspring.
Cellular Respiration n The release of energy from food. The MITOCHONDRIA is where this happens. Most life forms receive energy from the breakdown of glucose C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 → 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O + 36 ATP
Growth/Development From one cell, we grow/develope into a multi-cellular organism.
4. Growth & Development: increasing in size and progressing through a life cycle
Development: Developmental stages for humans include birth infancy, childhood, puberty, adulthood, old age & death.
Frogs and most insects go through metamorphosis.
Adaptation Any structure, behavior, or internal process that allows an organism to respond to stimuli & better survive in an environment is called an adaptation. A gradual accumulation of adaptations over time is evolution.
Characteristics of Life 8. Evolution: As a group, living organisms change over time.
All living things Response to a Stimuli Ability to react to external condition n n Cold - shiver Run - heart beat increases Food - salivate Pet the squirrel happy squirrel or bloody finger
