TONE Defined �"Tone is a particular way of expressing feelings or attitudes that will influence how the reader feels about the characters, events, and outcomes. �Speakers show tone more easily than writers because they can use voice tone, gesture, and facial expressions. A writer must use words alone. "

Why Study Tone? �We are studying tone because it is a skill you are going to be required to identify in multiple assessments. You will also see it on the MCA reading test!
Why Study Tone? �There are endless amounts of possibilities for tone! �Tone affects the underlying meaning of nonfiction work and may or may not affect all of a fiction piece as a whole. �Tone can be found in all forms of writing including music/song lyrics. �There is always a tone…if it does not seem like there is a tone in non-fiction writing it would be called a “formal” or “informative” tone. �There can be more than one tone in writing. It may shift quickly in fiction writing. It is your job to identify the meaning in the shifts.
TONE Word �Don’t share your tone word with other groups. �List synonyms for your tone word. �List antonyms for your tone word.
Conveying TONE �Write one sentence your dog would say to convey the tone. �Write one sentence a human would say to the dog that would also convey the tone.
Conveying TONE �Write a description of a dog walking in the park, conveying the attitude on the card. You may not use the word written on the card in your description.
