01 02 03 04 Each group will write a description of the group’s philosophy and will choose a location in the classroom as their home base. To pull up YOUR challenge, open your Bindle App, and click on the stack of challenge cards. At this point, only the first challenge should be available to you. Before each challenge you’ll probably have a new message from Tom and Huck. (MRS. FIGUEROA WILL PLAY ANIMATION 1)

§ Remember, do your best whenever possible to include descriptive language and evidence from the text for this challenge and the other challenges as well. You should strive to write at least one full page for each challenge. Don’t be surprised if I ask you to go back and add more detail, strong verbs, or descriptive language. FIRST Finally, remember that each member of the group needs to turn in a piece of writing to me by clicking “submit” on CHALLENyour notepad, even though only one of you will show me your essay in class. This is group work and I expect every member of each group to be involved in the writing GE process, looking for information, and adding details. I may assign writing roles if it seems as though not everyone in § a group is contributing. § When you hand in your challenge documents, I will check them and give your first clue.

§ Now as we think about this challenge, let’s break it down into steps.

§ Now as we think about this challenge, let’s break it down into steps. First let’s think about Tom, Huck, and Joe’s journey to the island in the middle of the Mississippi. What did they like about the island? FIRST CHALLENG E § So there a number of things that go into picking a place to establish a fort. Now let’s think about this room. Could someone give me a place they would like to set up a fort? And what about that place makes it a good fort? § Now when the next question asks what’s your philosophy, the question is asking what does your group believe. When Huck and Tom pretend to be pirates, they say their mission is to terrorize the high seas, and when Tom is trying to get a ticket at bible school he is trying to be an upstanding citizen. When you are looking for the treasure, what are things your team believes?

§ Choose a spot in the classroom to create your fort. Write a one-page, detailed description of why you chose this place as your fort. What makes this area a good choice? Is it easily defended? Is it a comfortable place to lounge? Is it a hideaway? How will your home base help you in your quest to find the treasure?

§ Write a group charter that STEP 2 includes answers to the following questions:

§ Write a group charter that STEP 2 includes answers to the following questions: What is your group’s goal? Clearly, you want to find the treasure, but give more detail than that. § What is your group’s philosophy? What would make other people want to join your group? § How should other people think of your group? See Chapter 13 or Chapter 22 of Tom Sawyer for group charter ideas.

STEP 3 § Present both documents to the teacher to get your first clue.

STEP 3 § Present both documents to the teacher to get your first clue. 1. What is one reason you think the spot you chose for your home base was a good choice? 2. What is one reason you think your group is special?

§ a strong introduction that sets up your argument or opinion and a concluding paragraph that sums up your thoughts. § at least two quotes from the text, when THE WRITING appropriate, and analysis of those quotations to back up your initial argument, or a detailed direct reference to the text. § a connection between each paragraph in order to create a cohesive piece of writing. § descriptive language or vocabulary from Tom Sawyer within your paper. § After each class, review each group’s completed writing from the day’s Quest session. Give groups one point for each of the items that they responded to successfully. § Tally the day’s points.
