WHAT IS TOLERANCE? Tolerance is the ability or willingness to tolerate the existence or opinions that one dislikes or disagrees with or doesn’t believe in.
DIFFERENT RELIGIONS OF THE UK The UK is a multi-faith country with Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, Jews, agnostics and atheists living together.
HOW CAN TOLERANCE BE ENCOURAGED? We can all be tolerant of other people, but, we could do more. We could be more respectful of other people, showing greater understanding of others. Respect others and take the time to listen to them. We should always be willing to agree to disagree when our opinions are different. Teaching what the religions have in common can also lead to tolerance as many share common themes such as sharing the teachings from the Old testament within the Abrahamic religions
CHRISTIAN VIEWS ON TOLERANCE There are many quotes in the Bible that tell us to be accepting of others, these include: “Judge not, that you be judged” (Matthew 7: 13) “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5: 44) These quotes tell us to accept everyone for who they are and to have mutual respect
