After the printing press, they had about 20 million!
• Most historians will say the PRINTING PRESS had the MOST IMPACT on communication & education than ANY OTHER invention! • It quickly spreads ideas all over Europe that have never been heard before! – Including Martin Luther’s ideas!
Northern Humanists & Writers • Focused more on religion than the Italian Renaissance • Desiderius Erasmus- translated the Bible into the vernacular- language everyone can understand • Sir Thomas More- wrote a book called Utopia, about an ideal society where men & women live in peace & harmony, no one is idle, all are educated… sounds nice right? – Discussion: What is your Utopia?
Northern Humanists & Writers • William Shakespeare- (1590 - 1613) – Wrote 37 plays, all expressing universal themes in realistic settings • Focused on the individual & the classics • Characters spoke in the vernacular

Church Abuses • Popes competed for political power • Church officials got caught up in worldly affairs (building fancy cathedrals, etc. ) • Popes lived lavish lifestyles • Bible was written in LATIN ONLY! The Protestant Reformation • Reform- change • The last straw for Martin Luther- selling indulgences – He was a devout Catholic monk – Visited Rome & saw all the corruption – Felt the church needed to be reformed – Wrote his 95 Theses (arguments) against the church to a priest – Immediately, copies of his theses were printed all over Europe (printing press!) – Catholic Church- NOT HAPPY!!!
