• 1864 - The first cigarette factory opens • 1875 - Company begins producing chewing tobacco • 1890 - Tobacco categorized as drug by the US Pharmacopoeia • 1902 - Phillip Morris comes to America to sell cigarettes • 1913 - American Society for the Control of Cancer is formed
• 1913 - RJ Reynolds introduces “Camel” • 1939 - German researchers make link between lung cancer and smoking • 1944 - American Cancer Society began warning public about risks of smoking • 1954 - First lawsuits are filed by former smokers against tobacco companies • 1965 - Surgeon General Warning on packaging
