The Toll of Tobacco in Kentucky • Every year nearly 8, 900 Kentuckians die from smoking • Smoking is estimated to cost Kentucky $1. 92 billion in direct health care costs, including $589. 8 million in Medicaid costs annually • For every $1 invested in comprehensive tobacco control programs Kentucky will save $2 -$10 • The CDC lists smoking among the conditions that can make someone immunocompromised and, therefore, more at risk for contracting COVID-19 and other infectious diseases 4
