How does she convey these to the reader? Deborah Orr presents the view that people who are from the north of the country are often patronised by people in the south, particularly London. She describes a conversation with a man she met in a London pub who told her to put her money away as she was probably ‘struggling in the big city’. Her view of this treatment is made clear in the quote “He thought he was being absolutely charming. He was, obviously, being a patronising, xenophobic, sexist twonk. ” The use of the short sentence implies her frustration and also the difference between their opinions. In addition, the parenthesis emphasises the adverb ‘obviously’ which suggests that her view is the right one and he is wrong to judge her as weak and vulnerable just because she isn’t a Londoner with their accent.
