To solve problems involving line graphs. Year 5 - Statistics (EXS) Lesson 3
LI: To read and interpret line graphs. I can identify what the axes of the graph are measuring. I can following the X axis first and then the Y axis to read the graph. I can draw conclusion from a line graph. Vocabulary Line graph Time X axis Y axis Title Measure Patterns Conclusions Recap from the last lesson… Look at the skills and then quickly check your understanding. Previously, we looked at how we can read and interpret line graphs. . . Let’s quickly recap the rules of reading line graphs. . . - Line graphs are used to help us measure certain events over a certain period of time. For example, we can measure the amount of milk drunk in one month by a baby. The time which in this case would be weeks is typically written along the x axis. The event (the amount of milk the baby has drunk) will be measured along side the y axis. We can then read the graph by looking at the x axis and y axis and draw conclusions. For example in two weeks (x axis) the baby might have drunk 3500 ml of milk (y axis).
Learning check: You do…. Answers: 1. 17 minutes 2. 26 cm 3. 3 minutes QUESTIONS: The following graph shows the height of the water during a bath. 1. Jamie gets out the bath before he unplugs the drain. How long was he in the bath for? 2. What was the maximum height of the water? 3. How long did it take for all the water to drain away? If you are struggling or didn’t get the correct answers, rewatch the video above which breaks down how to read line graphs. If you feel confident, carry on with the slides.
