The Trial (Quick version) Third Witness: Miss Mayella Ewell Says Tom Robinson attacked her from behind when she went to pay him for chopping wood Claims she fought back, but he overpowered her In response to Atticus’ questions, she reveals that she doesn’t know how Tom Robinson could have beaten her Fourth Witness: Tom Robinson Says Mayella kissed him and he tried to get away without hurting her Claims he heard Mr. Ewell say “You goddamn whore, I’ll kill ya” as he ran away In response to Mr. Gilmer’s questions, he says that he ran away because he knew people would think he was to blame.
Journal #4 Please respond to ALL of the following questions: 1. What are some of the weaknesses in the prosecution’s testimony? In other words, how do we know Tom Robinson is innocent? 2. Why do you think Tom’s pity for Mayella makes the jury uncomfortable? 3. How do you feel toward Mayella? Is she generally sympathetic or unsympathetic? Why? You do not need to provide long responses to each question, but you should write at least a page in total. If you are done with all of your journal entries, feel free to begin working on a thesis statement and an outline for your essay.
