• Jem cried about the jury’s decision. • He kept on saying “It ain’t right”. • Told Dill to stop going places without telling adults where he was going.
• Jem told Miss Maudie he always thought Maycomb folks were the best folks in the world but now he was rudely awakened. • Jem wishes more people tried to help his father. • Jem says Christian judges and Christian lawyers can’t make up for heathen juries.
• Atticus waited for the children under the streetlight. He looked as if nothing happened, his old impassive self. • He agreed with Jem that it was not right. • Atticus said the court were as much part of Maycomb county as missionary teas were. The children had a right to be exposed to it.
• He was tired and went to bed. • Atticus told Jem the jury did it before, they did it tonight and they would do it again. (He refers to the fact that a white jury will always find a black man guilty)
• It was not time to worry yet, Atticus was going to appeal the case. • Atticus’s eyes filled with tears when he saw all the gifts. He told Calpurnia to thank them and to ask them not to do it again, times were hard.
• Said to Atticus: “I’m sorry brother. ” • Alexandra continued to say that the children should not have been in court.
• Tom Robinson’s father sent a chicken. • Estelle down at the hotel sent rolls. • There were hunks of salt pork, tomatoes, beans, scuppernongs, a jar of pickled pigs knuckles.
• Calpurnia found all the food around the steps the morning when she arrived, the negro quarters were grateful for what he has done.
• Arrived for breakfast • Dill said he would have told Miss Rachel but Miss Rachel was tired from looking for Dill the previous night.
• Dill said he told Miss Rachel many times where he was but she drank too much early in the morning to remember. • Dill said he would be a clown one day. He will join a circus and laugh his head of at people. He will be a new kind of clown who will laugh at people not be laughed at.
• If Atticus Finch wants to butt his head against a stone wall it’s his head.
• Wants to know who gave them permission to go to the courtroom • Did Atticus put them up in the coloured balcony? • Wasn’t it right close up there with all those __?
• Did Scout understand all the testimonies? • Didn’t it make you mad to see your daddy beat?
• Silences Stephanie. • Asks Jem if they will be able to eat some cake. • For the first time Jem got a slice of cake from the big cake and Dill and Scout still got to little cakes.
• She tells Jem not to worry, things are not as bad as it seems. • She simply wants to tell them that there are some men in this world who were born to do our unpleasant jobs for us. Atticus was one of them. • She realises Jem does not understand what she is trying to say.
• Maudie says Maycomb folks are the safest in the world and when they are asked to act like Christians, Atticus does it for them. • Miss Maudie points out that there are people who help Atticus.
• It was no coincidence that Judge Taylor appointed Atticus to defend Tom Robinson. Court-appointed defences was always given to Maxwell Green. • Miss Maudie said she waited the previous night for the outcome of the jury and realized it was only Atticus Finch who could make a jury take so much time to make a descision.
• Miss Rachel told Dill to get in the backyard and stay there. Danger was coming. • Miss Stephanie said that Mr Bob Ewell stopped Atticus on the post-office corner, spat in his face, and told him he’d get him if it took the rest of his life.
