To George In fourteen hundred ninety two Columbus
To George… In fourteen hundred ninety two Columbus sailed the ocean blue But at the time he had no clue of waves equations and turbulent too… Today when we use Mellor-Yamada, at least level-Two We still don’t fully understand it, except very few… The mixing was essential when ocean modeling grew Columbus could have been helped by a model if he knew…
In 1769 Benjamin Franklin charted the Gulf Stream And years later, George Mellor had a scheme Building an ocean model “creme de la crème” More realistic that the “real thing”- what a dream… With help from Alan and others who coded the equation POM was born as a pioneering model of the coastal ocean Simulating the Gulf, sea-ice and the Atlantic Could such a model save the Titanic? 1977
In the 1950 s George went to Princeton, it was easy to get in A game of golf with the Dean, and he let him win… Princeton was also a milestone in my career- the departing station First paper with George: “A Gulf Stream Model and Data Assimilation” To work with George was fun, I was really blessed And 3 decades later, with the Gulf Stream I am still obsessed…
POM led the way to many models dozens and dozens Some new and some its illegitimate half cousins… Like George himself- an innovative scientific force POM remains strong for 40 -years- a reliable workhorse Besides George’s contribution, which we all admired He knew how to enjoying life before and after he retired SPEM ROMS NCOM FVCOM ECOM MICOM HYCOM NEMO MOM POP ADCIRC HOPE SCHISM
Always ready to share with friends another glass of beer Built a house in Block Island- fought those annoying deer… Study the dynamics though the equations of motion But also sailed with his boat along the coast of the ocean Once to a meeting in DC I flew with George in his airplane This old grumbling flying machine- was quite a scary pain To relax my nerves and high tensions He declared- “I can handle three dimensions”
If you came to Princeton as a young student, postdoc or visiting scholar You learned how to model the ocean, from the tropic to the polar Over the years we got some gray hair or partially bald But we all became ocean modelers in George Mellor’s mold Many years of ocean modeling, how the years flew We all congratulate George with a big THANK YOU! Dedicated to George Mellor from Tal Ezer (@Princeton: 1989 -2007)
