LI: To divide 4 digit numbers by two digit numbers and interpret remainders as decimals or fractions. I can divide using the “bus-stop” method I can use my remainder and the divisor to make my remainder a fraction. I can add a decimal point and zeroes to make my reminder a decimal. Vocabulary Divide Digit Dividend Divisor Quotient Share Grouped Bus stop Regroup Remainders Decimals Fractions Recap from the last lesson… Look at the skills and then quickly check your understanding. Previously, we covered using the “busstop” method in order to solve division equations. Let’s quickly recap the rules of using the bus stop method and then you can test what you remember on the next slide. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Place your dividend on the inside of the bus stop and the divisor on the outside. Then ask yourself “how many times does the divisor go in to each digit of the dividend? ” it might be a good idea to write out a list of the divisors multiples if you are not confident with your times tables. Write down the number of how many times it goes on top of the bus stop. If the divisor doesn’t go fully into a digit, regroup the remainder on to the next digit and read the number as a two digit number. If there are no more numbers to regroup, the remaining amount you would’ve regrouped will become your remainder. To write your remainder as a fraction, your numerator will be the remainder and the divisor will be the denominator. To write your remainder as a decimal, add and decimal point to your answer line and the dividend. Add a 0 to the dividend and regroup your remainder on to the 0. Keep adding zeros and regrouping until there are no remainders left.

QUESTIONS: Solve the following equations writing down your remainders as fractions and decimals. 1. 4806 ÷ 4 = 2. 3628 ÷ 3 = 3. 8424 ÷ 5 = Answers: 1. 1201 ⅖, 1201. 5 2. 1209 ⅓, 1209. 33 3. 1684 ⅘, 1864. 8 If you are struggling or didn’t get the correct answers, rewatch the video above which breaks down how to divide using bus stop. If you feel confident, carry on with the slides.

How many nails and screws will he need for a table that is 5 times smaller? 4100 ÷ 5 = 820 nails. 1975 ÷ 5 = 395 screws Q 2 1766 oranges are packed into bags. Each bag has 12 oranges. How many full sacks will there be? 1766 ÷ 12 = 147 full bags. Q 3 Jimmy has 4684 seeds that he wants to plant into 21 flower beds. He argues that he will have some seeds left over. Explain why he is wrong. He is wrong because there will not be any remainder therefore there will not be any seeds left over.
