Freedom from… Jesus actually defeated sin by obediently dying on the cross. This forgave sins, for all time. He already forgave sins individually, during his earthly ministry (paralysed man, woman in adultery, bleeding). When he forgave sins, things happened: - health was restored - dignity was restored - people found freedom from their bad actions Sins caused them to be weak – his healing gave them strength. It also reconciled them to God – and this would also take them to eternal life. Saved. Christians have the gift of always being able to receive Jesus’ forgiveness, through the Holy Spirit. 1. How does the story show redemption (paying a price for you) S&C* Can you think of another way of explaining how Jesus saves us? You are walking along in the forest. You are tired, and not paying attention to where you are going. You stumble over a tree root, lose your balance, and find yourself falling into a very deep hole. In this hole, lives a maneating spider. You feel a web weaving around you, surrounding you in tight bands. You find yourself less and less able to climb out of the pit. A stranger is just then walking past. He sees you and does not hesitate at all to jump in. To your surprise, the web that tied you up and trapped you, has melted away, and you climb out into a beautiful morning. You run away without looking back. You never find out what happened to the man.

The Story of Ruth A Jewish family moved to a foreign land. Ruth married into this family; but, tragically, all the men died. Ruth and her mother-in-law, Naomi, move back to Israel. Ruth was now herself the foreigner in a strange land. In an effort to provide for her mother-in-law, Ruth went to gather grain in the fields. She met Boaz, a wealthy land owner where she had been working. He happened to be a kinsman of her mother in law, Naomi. But, there was another family member who was an even closer relative. In those days, a relative had the responsibility to care for women in the family, and even to marry them himself. But this man neither wanted the responsibility nor the right. Boaz approached him, saying that he would take responsibility for the women, and the right to marry Ruth. The man accepted his offer, and Ruth joined Boaz in marriage. The Bible calls Boaz the kinsman redeemer. He bought the responsibility to care for the ladies and the right to marry Ruth. This redemption of Ruth into the family of Israel brought Ruth into the lineage of King David and made her one of Jesus’ ancestors.
