ACT V – SCENE I • Lorenzo and Jessica are spending a few happy moments when messengers arrive informing them that Portia will return soon. • They decide to greet Portia and arrange for musicians to do so. • Portia and Nerissa arrive and request Lorenzo and Jessica not to tell their husbands that they left the house. • As Jessica and Lorenzo promise, Bassanio, Antonio and Gratiano arrive. ACT V – SCENE I • Bassanio tells everyone the happy news about Antonio. • On the other side, Nerissa initiates a fight with Gratiano blaming him about giving her ring to another woman. • Portia joins her in chiding Gratiano and asks Bassanio to show her his ring. • When Bassanio and Antonio are unable to justify the loss of their rings, the wives promise to never fulfill their duties to them. ACT V – SCENE I • Antonio interjects saying that it is completely his fault. • Portia and Nerissa tells their husbands the truth about the lawyer and return the rings to their husbands requesting that they never part from them. • Portia gives Antonio the good news that his ships have returned to Venice safely and that he is a rich man again. • They also hand over Jessica’s and Lorenzo’s share of money to them. • Everyone is happy about the good fortune that they have received.
