Tivoli SANergy SANs are Powerful but Most SANs

Tivoli SANergy

SANs are Powerful, but. . . Most SANs today offer limited value • • • One system, multiple storage devices Multiple systems, isolated zones of storage No disk or file sharing (tapes only) Barriers to SAN success • Lack of OS support for device sharing • • Non-integrated, proprietary alternatives for storage segmentation / LUN management standards Standard file systems just can’t be shared • • Assume exclusive access, no coherency Clustered file systems don’t scale

Tivoli SANergy The World’s First SAN O/S THE FILE SHARING OF A LAN THE SPEED OF A SAN • Transparent file sharing • Full file and byte-range locking • Robust access control • Heterogeneous support • Shared centralized storage • High bandwidth, low latency • Direct media access • Efficient, lightweight protocol COMPATIBILITY THROUGH OPEN STANDARDS • Windows NT® security w/NTFS, or UNIX security w/UFS • Supports any network-aware application • SAN network- and media-independent

True Sharing for your SAN

Share Storage Devices Consolidate storage for multiple systems in a single array • • • Save money: 1 x 1 TB costs less than 5 x 200 GB arrays Create isolated volumes for security No loss of performance or throughput Hot-swap volumes in event of system failure No special hardware or complex zoning

Share File Systems Multiple systems, common file system, independent application directories • • • Centralized repository without the performance penalty of a LAN Speed large-file workflows Enable data-intense collaboration Dynamic relocation or resizing of files & databases without repartitioning Backup data over the SAN

Share Application Data Multiple systems, common file system, shared data files • • • Native OS security protects access to files Full file and byte-range locking ensures data integrity Cache coherency and optimizations Supports virtually any network-aware application True file sharing eliminates performance bottlenecks of LAN servers and appliances

SANergy Benefits Cost Availability Scalability Performance

Uses for SANergy • • • Store multiple databases on a single storage array Share digital video for high-speed NLE Accelerate graphics arts workflows Scale web servers without data replication Offload LAN traffic and performance bottlenecks Use it wherever you might use a Net. App. . . And lots of places that you can’t
