Titus 1 Timothy 2 Timothy Bellaire Church of
Titus, 1 Timothy, & 2 Timothy Bellaire Church of Christ Winter 2019
Two Ground Rules to Maximize Our Bible Study (1) The more people that speak, the more we all get out of it. (2) Let’s stick just to the text we are studying
• Do these books take place early or late in NT history? • Do the churches in Crete (Titus) and Ephesus (Timothy) seem more or less stable than other churches in the NT?
Titus 1: 1– 9 • Why did Paul leave Titus on Crete?
A detour: Canons of construction A far too fancy word for rules of thumb that help us interpret laws Example: “Interpret ambiguous (unclear) laws in a way that helps (and won’t hurt) criminal defendants” Law: “No vehicles in the park”
A detour: Canons of construction Interpret ambiguous (unclear) laws in a way that helps (and won’t hurt) criminal defendants Law: “No vehicles in the park” Did these three people break the law? (1) Jimmy drives his pickup truck in the grass (2) Martha walks her dog (3) Grandma takes her grandson to the park, riding her electric wheelchair
A Canon of Construction for Titus 1 & 1 Timothy 3 God wants elders!
God wants elders! How does this help us interpret 1: 6? Are these men qualified? (Assume he has every other qualification imaginable) (1) A man left his first wife scandalously to go and marry his second wife. (2) A man has been a good husband to his only wife forty years. (3) [Insert hypothetical situation we could debate all class]
Titus 1: 1– 9 • What’s the most important qualification? • How does that guide us in interpreting the rest?
Titus 1: 1– 9 • What leadership qualities aren’t here that you might expect? • What does it mean that elders manage God’s house?
Titus 1: 10– 16 • What are verses 10– 16 explaining? • Or, why did Paul put verses 10– 16 right after verses 5– 9?
Titus 1: 10– 16 • What group was especially rebellious? • What were they about? • (1) Circumcision • (2) Food laws • (3) Sabbath • How does this help explain vs. 15?
Titus 1: 10– 16 • What does the Cretans’ bad character (verse 12) have to do with the false teaching?
Titus 1: 10– 16 • What was these false teachers’ motivation? (verse 11) • “Thus, by their fruit you will recognize [false prophets]. ” -Matthew 7: 20
Titus 2: 1– 10 • What five groups are addressed in this section?
Titus 2: 1– 10 • What are some broad thoughts you had about this section? (That apply to all 5 groups)
Titus 2: 1– 10 • (1) Different groups get treated differently • (2) But everyone has a role to fill • (3) None is better or worse, just different
Titus 2: 1– 10 • What’s the goal (there’s kinda 3) Paul says we will accomplish if we obey this section? • Hint: look at verses 5, 8, and 10 • Who is Paul addressing when he mentions these goals?
