Six Steps to Responsible Recruitment Implementing the Employer Pays Principle www. employerpays. org
Key Messages Eradicating worker fees is fundamental to combatting forced labour. Payment of recruitment fees by migrant workers is a key cause of forced labour. It creates cycles of debt, leaving workers vulnerable and less able to assert their rights or to freely choose employment. Public commitment and due diligence can create positive change. Collective leadership is essential to achieve scale and impact. A responsible company should prohibit the charging of recruitment fees to workers anywhere in its operations and ensure that the Employer Pays Principle is driven as far down the supply chain as possible. The Leadership Group for Responsible Recruitment is calling for shared responsibility and burden-sharing with brands, suppliers, labour providers and governments to embed the Employer Pays Principle and eradicate worker fees in supply chains within 10 years. www. employerpays. org
What Members are Saying “ The Leadership Group for Responsible Recruitment has a bold aim - the eradication of worker fees over the coming decade. What Members are Saying “ We believe we can achieve far more by working with others. The Employer Pays principle is a good example of this - by bringing our voices together, we have the opportunity to create momentum and awareness on an important issue which to date has not been well understood, working to promote a model of ethical recruitment and fairer treatment of migrant workers. ” Louise Nicholls, Head of Responsible Sourcing, M&S www. employerpays. org
What Members are Saying “ The right to freely choose employment is severely eroded when workers have to pay recruitment fees simply to get a job. The Employer Pays Principle has the potential to make a meaningful difference in the lives of millions of workers around the world, which is good for communities and good for business. ” Brent Wilton, Global Workplace Rights Director at The Coca-Cola Company www. employerpays. org

What Members are Saying “ Business can play a pivotal role in combatting the exploitation of migrant workers, but only if we work collectively to achieve this goal. What Members are Saying “ Migrant workers are an integral part of global business yet the abusive use of migrant labour is prominent in many sectors.
