Purpose of Today’s Presentation O Provide information about our school’s Title I program for parents/guardians of students in our school.
Every Student Succeeds Act O ESSA O December 2015 O Reauthorization of the Elementary & Secondary Education Act of 1956 O Formerly No Child Left Behind (NCLB)
What is Title I? O Federal funds to provide programs to help support children who are struggling in the area of reading & math O Used for a variety of programs and activities designed to increase student academic achievement in the area of reading O Funds are distributed to Districts/schools based on the number of low income students, BUT students are selected to receive services based on academic need!
What is Title I… Continued? O Extra or additional help – Supplemental (in addition to what they learn during language arts or math time in the classroom) O Title I services DO NOT replace the core curriculum.
Who is a Title I Student? O Students identified as “at risk of failing” state academic standards in grades K-4 O Districts set qualification criteria O NOT based on poverty – based on academic need
Types of Programs School -wide Program – East, South, and North Primary Schools ü 40% or higher poverty level ü Approved school-wide plan that is updated yearly and includes parents on the committee/team ü Not required to identify particular children-all students and teachers are considered Title I ü More flexible use of funds- used to upgrade the educational program in ways that may impact every student in the school ü Push-in program model

Types of Programs Cont. O Targeted Assisted Programs o 35% or higher poverty level o Students identified or “targeted” for the program based on performance on assessments (need) o Assist students with meeting state academic standards in reading and grade level targets o Can be a pull-out or push-in program (Push -in)

Assessments Used to Identify Students in Need of Additional Support Assessments are used to help teachers determine if a student is understanding the content presented in the classroom. We use the following assessments for all of our students: Kindergarten Screening (K) Sentence Dictation (K & 1), High Frequency Words (K -2) Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment (K-4) Common Formative Assessments (K-4)* Common Summative Assessments (K-4)* Common Benchmark Assessment (K-4)*
O Type(s) of Services Provided All of the assessment data is entered into a spreadsheet that rank orders the students with regards to “need. ” O Guided Reading Groups O Flexible groups O 3 -5 students O 3 -5 times per week O 20 - 30 minutes O Reorganized throughout the year based on updated assessment data O Early Literacy Intervention (ELI) O Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) (K-4)

PSSA Proficiency Levels Your child will be taking the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) in grades 3 -8, during the Spring. O Four Proficiency Levels for the PSSA O Advanced O Proficient O Basic O Below Basic ELA & Math (3 rd and 4 th grade), Science (4 th grade)
Assessment Results O You will be notified of your child’s assessment results. O The timeline is as follows: O PSSA: Fall after the test is taken O F&P: O Benchmark: October, January, May Quarterly
School Performance Profile O SPP O School level NOT district level O Title I designated schools O School Reward: High Achieving (Top 5%) O School Reward: High Progress O No Designation O Focus School O Priority School (Bottom 5%)
School Performance Profile Continued O The SPP provides the public with information on how public schools across Pennsylvania are performing academically O Impacts the teacher and principal evaluation system O Is used for accountability for Title I schools under the state’s approved federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

Parental Rights under ESSA O Teacher Qualifications (September) O Not properly certified teacher four or more weeks (As necessary) O Request opportunities to meet regularly with staff for parent involvement O Participate in decisions affecting your child O Review application for Title I and make suggestions
