INFORMATIVE LANGUAGE FUNCTIONS: The language used with the purpose of giving information. Example – The Southernmost point in India is the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE FUNCTIONS: The use of language for expressing one’s feelings and emotions or thoughts. Example – “That’s really great. ” DIRECTIVE LANGUAGE FUNCTION: The use of language that seeks for guide or to command. Example – “Go ahead. ” 4

Now, We discuss about the next three functions, there are heuristic, magi native and representational, all helping the child to come to terms with his for her environment. These three functions can be analysed – Heuristic: To explore and gain knowledge of the environment. Example – “What’s that ? ” Imaginative: Here language is used to tell stories, jokes and to create an imaginary environment. Example – “Lets Pretend. ” Representational: This language is known as “informative language” to convey facts and information. Example – “I have got something to tell you. ” 7
