Matthew 6: 9 -13 (NIV 84) 9 “This, then, is how you should pray: “ ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. Luke 11: 2 -4 (NIV 84) 2 He said to them, “When you pray, say: “ ‘… Father …, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. … … Give us each day our daily bread. 4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us [is indebted to us](ESV). And lead us not into temptation. ’ ” 13 And lead us not into temptation, … but deliver us from the evil one. ’ … [For yours is the kingdom and the … power and the glory forever. … 3

The context of the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6 • Don’t show off for people (like a hypocrite/actor) –instead pray with sincerity. • Don’t show off for God (like a pagan/gentile) –instead pray short and simple. • Don’t show off for yourself (as an unforgiven/ing person) –instead pray with sorrow for sin.

The context of the Lord’s Prayer in Luke 2 • The disciples asked Jesus how to pray: –since other disciples asked their teachers how to pray. –since they wanted to pray like Jesus prayed. • You can even get food from: –a cranky neighbor in the middle of the night by asking. –a sinful earthly father by asking. • How much more can you: – get food from your holy, loving, heavenly Father by asking. – get spiritually good things from God too.

Outlining the Lord’s Prayer Introduction: Our Father in heaven, 1. a. hallowed be your name [on earth as it is in heaven], b. your kingdom come [on earth as it is in heaven], c. your will be done (on earth as it is in heaven). 2. Give us today/each day our daily bread. 3. a. Forgive us our debts/sins, (as we also forgive our debtors). b. And lead us not into temptation, c. but deliver us from the evil one. Conclusion: a. For (yours is) the kingdom [forever], b. And [yours is] the power [forever], c. And [yours is] the glory (forever). Amen. Four ways we ask God to save us from sin in the Lord’s Prayer • 3. a. Forgive us our debts/sins – Confess sins we have committed. • 3. a. As we also forgive our debtors – Forgive sins committed against us. • 3. b. And lead us not into temptation – Protect us from temptation to sin. • 3. c. But deliver us from the evil one – Deliver us from the devil who wants us to sin.

3. a. Forgive us our debts/sins = Confess sins we have committed. • Aspects of Forgiveness: – Emotionally – Relationally – Legally/Financially • Emotionally: – It’s good for us not to hold things against people, ourselves, or even God.

3. a. Forgive us our debts/sins = Confess sins we have committed. Psalm 103: 12 -13 (NIV 84) 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him. • Relationally: – God is our loving Father who we want to forgive us and call us to dinner.

3. a. Forgive us our debts/sins = Confess sins we have committed. Colossians (NIV 84) Colossians 2: 13 -15 (NIV 84) 13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. • Legally/Financially: –God is our judge who has the right and responsibility to punish us for the way we hurt Him and other people and to make sure we pay back what we owe.

3. a. As we also forgive our debtors = Forgive sins committed against us. Matthew 6: 14 -15(NIV 84) 14 For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. • God doesn’t owe us forgiveness since we have forgiven others, we owe forgiveness since God has forgiven us.

3. a. As we also forgive our debtors = Forgive sins committed against us. • Debt laws: Deuteronomy 15: 1 -2(NIV 84) 1 At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts. 2 This is how it is to be done: Every creditor shall cancel the loan he has made to his fellow Israelite. He shall not require payment from his fellow Israelite or brother, because the LORD’s time for canceling debts has been proclaimed. • Debt parables: – Matthew 18: The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant – Luke 7: The Sinful Woman who Loved Much

3. a. As we also forgive our debtors = Forgive sins committed against us. Forgiveness in Matthew: • Matthew 6 (Luke 6, 11): – Lord’s Prayer, Forgive or you won’t be forgiven. • Matthew 9 (Luke 5): – Jesus forgives the paralytic (and heals him to prove it). • Matthew 12: – Blasphemy against Jesus can be forgiven, not the Holy Spirit. • Matthew 18 (Luke 17): – Parable of unforgiving servant, Forgive 77/490 times • Matthew 26: – At the Lord’s Supper, Jesus said He would die to forgive our sin.

3. a. As we also forgive our debtors = Forgive sins committed against us. Forgiveness in Luke: • Luke 1: – Simeon says that forgiving sins is why Jesus came. • Luke 3: – John the Baptist preached repentance for the forgiveness of sin (coming in Jesus). • Luke 23: – Jesus prayed for God to forgive from the cross. • Luke 24: – Disciples were to preach repentance for the forgiveness of sin (now here in Jesus).

3. b. And lead us not into temptation = Protect us from temptation to sin. • Psalm 23: – God leads us as a shepherd • Exodus: – God led His people out of Egypt into the desert • Job, Genesis 3: – God sometimes lets His people be tested • Matthew 4, Luke 4: – Jesus was lead into the desert by the Holy Spirit where He was then tempted by the devil

James 1: 13 -14(NIV 84) James 13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me. ” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. • Since the fall, people have been able to sin just by following their internal desires.

3. b. And lead us not into temptation = Protect us from temptation to sin. Ephesians 2: 1 -3 (NIV 84) Ephesians 1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. • We struggle against the world, the flesh, and the devil.

3. c. But deliver us from the evil one = Deliver us from the devil 1. Lead us not into temptation [by] delivering us from the evil one. – Spiritual warfare emphasis on the devil (as the primary source of temptation). 2. Lead us not into temptation [and also] deliver us from the evil one. – Spiritual warfare emphasis on temptation (from sources that include the devil). • Evil one = John’s favorite name for the devil • Satan/Devil = Accuser (most common name for the evil one) • Tempter = Matthew 4, Luke 4

The Lord’s Prayer and the Lord’s Supper Matthew 26: 26 -29 (NIV 84) 26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body. ” 27 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father’s kingdom. ” • In the Lord’s Prayer we ask for help with our sins in the past, future, and present. • In the Lord’s Supper we admit that we need Jesus’ blood to forgive us our sin.
