CONSTRUCTION • Construction of Titanic began on March 31, 1909 when designer James Andrews laid the first keel plate in the Harland & Wolff Shipyards Belfast, Ireland. Titanic's sister ship The Olympic had begun some three months earlier and the two ships were essentially constructed side by over 15, 000 workers, Constructing the Titanic would cost 8 employees their life working on such a mammoth and often dangerous construction site. • It took approximately 26 months to build, In 1912 the cost to build the Titanic was $7. 5 million in today's economy that is $400 million. • There were 3, 000 rivets used in the construction of the hull, a mix of iron and steel.
SET SAIL • On 2 April 1912, thousands lined Belfast Lough to proudly watch Titanic - ‘the new wonder of the world’ - set off for Southampton. • The Titanic set sail on the 10 th of April 1912 on its maiden voyage. • Passengers seen it as a passage to the new world • As the Titanic left the Southampton docks, it came within two feet of crashing into another liner. This started the line of bad luck which would soon lead to the disaster of the Titanic.
THE ROUTE • The Titanic route was to be a return trip from Britain to America. • The outward route was to be Southampton, England – Cherbourg, France – Queenstown(Cobh), Ireland – New York, USA. • But was cut short by a tragic accident !! • The return route was going to be New York – Plymouth, England – Cherbourg – Southampton. • For four days, Titanic made good progress across the Atlantic, powered by three coal-burning engines. But it was no easy job to keep her moving. Each day, the ship’s 175 ‘fire men’ shovelled 600 tonnes of coal into the furnaces — that’s the weight of 100 elephants!
