• Tirana is the capital of Albania. It has 620, 000 inhabitants (2008). It is located in the center of the country nearly 30 kms from the Adriatic sea. The prefecture of Tirana consists for the most part of the valley of Tirana.
HISTORY The city was founded in 1614 by a Turkish general. The city got its name probably from the Albanian word të rrëna ie fallen (hence the plural Tirana) meaning landslides from the mountain foothills. This is the most trusted version of the name of the city and has no semantic affinity for tyranny. On February 8, 1920, Tirana was chosen as a temporary capital of Albania which had acquired independence in 1912. The city was chosen as the permanent capital on December 31, 1925.
GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES The Municipality of Tirana is located at (41. 33 ° N, 19. 82 ° E) in Tirana, about 32 kilometers (20 mi) inland. Tirana's average altitude is 110 meters (360 feet) above sea level and the highest point measuring 1. 828 m (5, 997. 38 Ft. ) at Mali with Gropa. The city is mostly surrounded by hills, with Dajti mountains to the east and a slight valley opening on the North-West overlooking the Adriatic Sea in the distance. The Tirana River flows through the city, like the current lane. The city borders on the municipalities around Paskuqan, Dajti, Farke, Vaqarr, Kashar and Kamez. The city has four artificial lakes: the Tirana Artificial Lake around which was built the Big Park, Paskuqani Lake, Farka Lake, and Lake Tufina. Tirana is on the same parallel as Naples, Madrid, Istanbul, and New York, and on the same meridian as Budapest
Sights in Tirana Et'hem Bey Mosque in Tirana - Albania The Et'hem Bey Mosque is located in the center of the Albanian capital Tirana. Construction started in 1789 by Molla Bey and finished in 1823 by his son Ethem Pasha (Haji Ethem Bey), great -grandson of Sulejman Pasha. During the totalitarianism of the Socialist People's Republic of Albania, the mosque was closed. On January 18, 1991, despite opposition from communist authorities, 10, 000 people entered holding flags. This was at the beginning of the fall of communism in Albania. The frescoes of the mosque depict trees, waterfalls and bridges; Still life paintings are a rarity in Islamic art. The tours of the mosque are given daily, although not during the prayer service.

Tirana has been redesigning its identity to a more Mediterranean city, lined with cafes and a "vibrant" nightlife.
