FORMAT – INCORPORATING QUOTES P E E now becomes T (opic) I (ntroduce quote) Q (uote) A (nalysis or explanation)
TOPIC SENTENCE Since a paragraph is a group of sentences that share a single idea, the topic sentence must have two parts: TOPIC & LIMITING IDEA Examples: 1. Basic: George and Lennie are both migrant workers. Topic = George and Lennie Limiting Idea = Similarities (migrant worker). 2. Advanced: Because Madame Loisel is superficial, she misses the deeper appreciation of most things in her life. Topic = Madame Loisel Limiting Idea = superficiality
INTRODUCTION You can introduce the speaker In the story, Sam stares at a beautiful sunset and says, “Quote” You can introduce the author According to Poe, “Quote” You can introduce a quote with a complete statement It is only through knowing Curley’s character that the reader can understand why he chooses Lennie to fight. “Quote”
QUOTE After you write your T and your I, it is time for the Q QUOTE Make sure your quote is in quotations marks and is cited with the page number in parentheses after the quote. A period should come AFTER the parentheses. Ex. “An’ live off the fatta the lan’” (14). “They sat by the fire and filled their mouths with beans and chewed mightily” (15).
ANALYSIS T = RED I = BLACK Q = ORANGE A = YELLOW Explain how the quote is important to your topic. Of all the quotes to choose from, you selected this particular one to support your topic sentence and thesis. Now, analyze HOW this supports what you’re trying to say. Do not just summarize what happened in the text. 2 -3 sentence explanation. Ex. In the first chapter, the reader discovers that the two main characters, George and Lennie, are both migrant workers. The outdoor life is one George and Lennie are accustomed to as such workers. Steinbeck illustrates this point during a late evening dinner between the two characters. “They sat by the fire and filled their mouths with beans and chewed mightily” (15). The nature setting in the first chapter helps to identify the characters as migrant workers who often live life outside. It is clear they are used to being outdoors and living off little more than beans, but content nonetheless.
