Unconditional Election Total Inherited Depravity Limited Atonement “There are very few errors and false doctrines of which the beginning may not be traced up to unsound views about the corruption of human nature. Wrong views of the disease will always bring with them wrong views of the remedy. Wrong views of the corruption of human nature will always carry with them wrong views of the grand antidote and cure of that corruption. ” (J. C. Ryle) Irresistible Grace Allen Dvorak Perseverance of the Saints 12
Divine Sovereignty Although the doctrine of Total Depravity is crucial to all forms of determinism, whether Augustinian, Lutheran, or Calvinistic, it is not really as important to the general system of Calvinism as it is to the Five Points. As we observed previously, if the doctrine of Total Depravity is defeated, all of the other Points are defeated. Nevertheless, the more important concept to Calvinism is the Sovereign’s “Eternal Decree. ” In other words, contrary to what Calvinists want us to believe, Calvinism does not have as its “starting point the fact that all mankind sinned in Adam. ” Calvinism starts with what they call the Eternal Decree, which the Westminster Confession explains thus: “God from all eternity did by the most wise and holy counsel of His own will, freely and unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to pass. ” In other words, the essence of Calvinism is its doctrine of Predestination. –Allan Turner, The Christian and Calvinism, p. 58 -59; continued Allen Dvorak 13
Divine Sovereignty About this, Calvin said: “Predestination we call the eternal decree of God, by which He has determined in Himself, what He would have to become of every individual of mankind. For they are not all created with a similar destiny; but eternal life is foreordained for some and eternal death for others. Every man, therefore, being created for one or the other of these ends, we say is predestined either to life or to death. ” Therefore, the supposed bondage of man’s will is the direct result of an alleged Eternal Decree, and only secondarily the result of an argument for Total Depravity. –Allan Turner, The Christian and Calvinism, p. 58 -59; concluded Allen Dvorak 14
Total Inherited Depravity “Our first parents, by this sin, fell from their original righteousness and communion with God, and we in them, whereby death came upon all; all becoming dead in sin and wholly defiled in all the faculties and parts of soul and body. They being the root, and, by God's appointment, standing the room and stead of all mankind; the guilt of the sin was imputed, and corrupted nature conveyed to all their posterity, descending from them by ordinary generation, being now conceived in sin, and by nature children of wrath, the servants of sin, the subjects of death, and all other miseries, spiritual, temporal, and eternal, unless the Lord Jesus set them free. From this original corruption, whereby we are utterly indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all good, and wholly inclined to all evil, do proceed all actual transgressions. ” –Philadelphia Confession of Faith, Chapter 6, #2 -4 Allen Dvorak 15
Total Inherited Depravity Our first parents, being seduced by the subtlety and temptation of Satan, sinned, in eating the forbidden fruit. This their sin, God was pleased, according to his wise and holy counsel, to permit, having purposed to order it to his own glory. By this sin they fell from their original righteousness and communion with God, and so became dead in sin, and wholly defiled in all the parts and faculties of soul and body. They being the root of all mankind, the guilt of this sin was imputed; and the same death in sin, and corrupted nature, conveyed to all their posterity descending from them by ordinary generation. From this original corruption, whereby we are utterly indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all good, and wholly inclined to all evil, do proceed all actual transgressions. This corruption of nature, during this life, doth remain in those that are regenerated; and although it be, through Christ, pardoned, and mortified; yet both itself, and all the motions thereof, are truly and properly sin. Every sin, both original and actual, being a transgression of the righteous law of God, and contrary thereunto, doth, in its own nature, bring guilt upon the sinner, whereby he is bound over to the wrath of God, and curse of the law, and so made subject to death, with all miseries spiritual, temporal, and eternal. –Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter 6 Allen Dvorak 16
Total Inherited Depravity Man, by his fall into a state of sin, hath wholly lost all ability of will to any spiritual good accompanying salvation: so as, a natural man, being altogether averse from that good, and dead in sin, is not able, by his own strength, to convert himself, or to prepare himself thereunto. –Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter 9, #3 Allen Dvorak 17

Unconditional Election By the decree of God, for the manifestation of His glory, some men and angels are predestinated unto everlasting life; and others foreordained to everlasting death. These angels and men, thus predestinated, and foreordained, are particularly and unchangeably designed, and their number so certain and definite, that it cannot be either increased or diminished. Those of mankind that are predestinated unto life, God, before the foundation of the world was laid, according to His eternal and immutable purpose, and the secret counsel and good pleasure of His will, has chosen, in Christ, unto everlasting glory, out of His mere free grace and love, without any foresight of faith, or good works, or perseverance in either of them, or any other thing in the creature, as conditions, or causes moving Him thereunto; and all to the praise–The of His glorious grace. Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter 3, #3 -5 Allen Dvorak 22
Unconditional Election “The doctrine of election declares that God, before the foundation of the world, chose certain individuals from among the fallen members of Adam’s race to be the objects of His undeserved favor. These, and these only, He purposed to save. God could have chosen to save all men (for He had the power and authority to do so) or He could have chosen to save none (for He was under no obligation to show mercy to any)--but He did neither. Instead He chose to save some and to exclude others. His eternal choice of particular sinners unto salvation was not based upon any foreseen act or response on the part of those selected, but was based solely on His own good pleasure and sovereign will. Thus election was not determined by, or conditioned upon, any thing that men would do, but resulted entirely from God’s selfdetermined purpose… –Steele Allen Dvorak 23
Unconditional Election Those who were not chosen to salvation were passed by and left to their own evil devices and choices. It is not within the creature’s jurisdiction to call into question the justice of the Creator for not choosing every one to salvation…The fact that He did this for some, to the exclusion of others, is in no way unfair to the latter group, unless of course one maintains that God was under obligation to provide salvation for sinners – a position which the Bible utterly rejects. ” —Steele Allen Dvorak 24
Unconditional Election “The doctrine of election is but a part of the much broader Biblical doctrine of God's absolute sovereignty. The Scriptures not only teach that God predestined certain individuals unto eternal life, but that all events, both small and great, come about as the result of God's eternal decree. The Lord God rules over heaven and earth with absolute control; nothing comes to pass apart from His eternal purpose. ” —Steele “Question: What are the decrees of God? Answer: God's decrees are the wise, free and holy acts of the counsel of his will, whereby, from all eternity, he hath for his own glory, unchangeable foreordained whatsoever comes to pass in time, especially concerning angels and men. ” —The Westminster Larger Catechism, p. 97 Allen Dvorak 25
Unconditional Election Addressing the Doctrine • God’s attitude toward the nonelect. “The rest of mankind God was pleased, according to the unsearchable counsel of his own will, whereby he extended or withholdeth mercy as he pleaseth, for the glory of his sovereign power over his creatures, to pass by, and to ordain them to dishonor and wrath for their sin, to the praise of his glorious justice. ” — The Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter 3, #7 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. -- 1 Timothy 2: 3– 4; ESV • Allen Dvorak 26
Unconditional Election Addressing the Doctrine • God’s attitude toward the nonelect. 34 So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, 35 but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. -- Acts 10: 34– 35; ESV • Election is by grace, but not unconditional. 10 Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. 11 For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. -- 2 Peter 1: 10– 11; ESV • Allen Dvorak 27
Limited Atonement The Lord Jesus, by his perfect obedience, and sacrifice of himself, which he, through the eternal Spirit, once offered up unto God, hath fully satisfied the justice of his Father; and purchased, not only reconciliation, but an everlasting inheritance in the kingdom of heaven, for all those whom the Father hath given unto him. —The Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter 8, #5 Allen Dvorak 28
Limited Atonement “Christ died to save particular persons who were given Him by the Father in eternity past. His death was, therefore, a one hundred percent success, in that all for who He died will be saved, and all for whom He did not die will receive ‘justice’ from God when they are cast into hell. ” —Spencer Allen Dvorak 29
Limited Atonement “Christ did not die simply to make it possible for God to pardon sinners. Neither does God leave it up to sinners as to whether or not Christ’s work will be effective. On the contrary, all for whom Christ sacrificed Himself will be saved infallibly. Redemption, therefore, was designed to bring to pass God’s purpose of election. . . Thus Christ’s saving work was limited in that it was designed to save some and not others, but it was not limited in value for it was of infinite worth and would have secured salvation for everyone if this had been God’s intention. ” —Steele Allen Dvorak 30
Limited Atonement Observations • The scope of the sacrifice 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. -- 1 Timothy 2: 3– 6; ESV 1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because 2 with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the taste death for everyone. sins of the whole world. -- Hebrews 2: 9; ESV -- 1 John 2: 1– 2; ESV • Allen Dvorak 31
Limited Atonement Observations • The scope of the sacrifice • Provision versus application of the atonement • Death of Jesus “wasted” on the non-elect? • Allen Dvorak 32
Irresistible Grace Those whom God hath predestinated unto life, he is pleased in his appointed, and accepted time, effectually to call, by his Word and Spirit, out of that state of sin and death in which they are by nature, to grace and salvation by Jesus Christ; enlightening their minds spiritually and savingly to understand the things of God; taking away their heart of stone, and giving unto them a heart of flesh; renewing their wills, and by his almighty power determining them to that which is good, and effectually drawing them to Jesus Christ; yet so as they come most freely, being made willing by his grace. This effectual call is of God’s free and special grace alone, not from anything at all foreseen in man, nor from any power or agency in the creature, being wholly passive therein, being dead in sins and trespasses, until being quickened and renewed by the Holy Spirit; he is thereby enabled to answer this call, and to embrace the grace offered and conveyed in it, and that by no less power than that which raised up Christ from the dead. —The Philadelphia Confession of Faith, Chapter 10, #1 -2 Allen Dvorak 33
Irresistible Grace “Since the living human spirit which is 'born of God' finds the Living God wholly irresistible, just as a dead human spirit finds the god of the dead (Satan) wholly irresistible, the Lord ‘quickens’ (‘makes alive’) all whom He chose in Christ Jesus before the foundation of the world. It is the gift of the New Nature which makes us find Jesus Christ absolutely ‘irresistible. ’” —Spencer Allen Dvorak 34
Irresistible Grace Further Summarized • Spiritual life (regeneration) comes first, then faith. • If man can reject the invitation of God (who wishes all men to be saved), God is not omnipotent! “Irresistible Grace is not grounded in the omnipotence of God, although it could be if the Lord so willed, but, rather, in the Gift of Life known as Regeneration. Since all dead human spirits are drawn irresistibly to Satan, the god of the dead, and all living human spirits are drawn irresistibly to Jehovah, the God of the living, our Lord simply gives His chosen ones the Spirit of Life! The moment He does so their spiritual polarity is changed. Where they were once ‘dead in trespasses and sins’ and oriented to the devil, now they are made ‘alive in Christ Jesus’ and oriented to God. ” —Spencer 35 • Allen Dvorak
Irresistible Grace Addressing the Doctrine • Faith is produced by the Word of God. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. ” 14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. -- Romans 10: 13– 14, 17; ESV • Power of the Word is denied. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. -- Romans 1: 16; ESV • Allen Dvorak 36
• 17 Biblical order: Faith first, then spiritual life So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. -- Romans 10: 13– 17; ESV We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the Father, might walk in newness of life. • glory Powerofof the Wordwe is too denied. -- Romans 6: 4; ESV For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. -- Romans 1: 16; ESV • Allen Dvorak 37
Perseverance of the saints They whom God hath accepted in his Beloved, effectually called and sanctified by His Spirit, can neither totally nor finally fall away from the state of grace: but shall certainly persevere therein to the end, and be eternally saved. —The Westminster Confession of Faith, Chapter 19, #1 Allen Dvorak 38
Perseverance of the saints “The doctrine of the perseverance of the saints does not maintain that all who profess the Christian faith are certain of heaven. It is saints - those who are set apart by the Spirit -- who persevere to the end. It is believers -- those who are given true, living faith in Christ -- who are secure and safe in Him. Many who profess to believe fall away, but they do not fall from grace for they were never in grace. True believers do fall into temptations, and they do commit grievous sins, but these sins do not cause them to lose their salvation or separate them from Christ. ” —Steele Allen Dvorak 39
Perseverance of the saints Further Summarized • Mechanism: imputed righteousness of Christ • The natural corollary of the first four tenets of Calvinism God has chosen the “saints” for salvation. The sovereign purpose of God will not be thwarted. • Allen Dvorak 40
“Salvation is accomplished by the almighty power of the triune God. The Father chose a people, the Son died for them, the Holy Spirit makes Christ’s death effective by bringing the elect to faith and repentance, thereby causing them to willingly obey the gospel. The entire process (election, redemption, regeneration) is the work of God and is by grace alone. Thus God, not man, determines who will be the recipients of the gift of salvation. ” –reformed. org Allen Dvorak 41

John 6: 65 (ESV) 65 And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father. ” Romans 3: 9– 12 (ESV) 9 What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10 as it is written: “None is righteous, not one; 11 no one understands; no one seeks for God. 12 All have turned aside; together they have become—Passages: worthless; Total no one does. Ephesians 2: 2– 3 (ESV) 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. —Passages: Total Inherited Depravity Allen Dvorak 44
2 Timothy 2: 25– 26 (ESV) 25 correcting his opponents with gentleness. Acts 13: 48 (ESV) 48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed. Romans 8: 28– 30 (ESV) 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. Romans 9: 11– 13 (ESV) 11 though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls— 12 she was told, “The older will serve the younger. ” 13 As it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated. ” —Passages: Unconditional Election Allen Dvorak 47
Romans 9: 16 (ESV) 16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. Romans 11: 4– 6 (ESV) 4 But what is God’s reply to him? “I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal. ” 5 So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. 6 But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace. Ephesians 1: 4– 5 (ESV) 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 1 Peter 2: 8– 9 (ESV) 8 and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense. ” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may.
