Tinder Bundles
A finished tinder bundles made from Cedar, waiting for a coal to make a fire A tinder bundle is made of very dry and fine fibersanything that can spark quickly. It is formed into a birds-nest shape and the coal is placed into the middle. This will catch fire from the coal.
• Tinder Bundles are needed to move from the step where a coal is produced with a bow drill and an actual fire. • Using a bowdrill, a coal is produced from wood dust. Although this coal is glowing and hot, you can't simply place it against a twig and get the twig to burn. An intermediate step is required: using a Tinder!
Materials for Tinder Bundles: • • • Cedar Cattail Down Milkweed Poplar Bark Cotton grass Roll some tree sap into your tinder bundle. It makes a wonderful coal extender!
Coal Extender • Materials which will hold a coal for a long time. They are very useful for carrying fire for an extended period of time, perhaps while on the move • Can also be used when you are in the process of starting a fire, but don't yet have all the material needed to actually make the fire Cattail Heads Tinder Fungus
Activity: Do Not Write This! • Find a Cedar Tree • Scrape the bark and collect some bark. Cedar bark makes very good tinder bundles. Peel off the dry bark and work it with your fingers to shred it up into fine pieces. • Collect some grass • Go back to the classroom and make a tinder bundle by weaving it into a flattened circular shape (or a birds nest).
