Features of Timelines Must have: • A line with dates or times (scale) • Information about important events linked to specific dates • The information is short and specific 1949 first traffic lights 1940 1950 1960 1970 Can have: • Title 1955 first fax message • Pictures • Arrows or lines connecting the scale to the information • The scale can be over a short period of time, or a long one (e. g. one day or a million years) • Names, places and technical words
The Scale A scale on a timeline shows how close events and dates are respective of each other. 2009 2003 2000 2011 2015 2010 2005 The dates placed on a scale should be relative to that place on the scale. 2003 2000 2009 2005 2011 2010 2015
First make a line with start and end dates Basic steps of creating a timeline scale Then break the line into smaller sections Then place dates with important events on the timeline 1870 First female judge 1800 1820 1840 1860 1880 1900
First: Making a line with a start and end date Step 1: Identify your first and last date e. g. 1949 and 1962 Step 2: Round these numbers inclusively to the tens column (to end in 0) This means round either up or down to include the original number within the timeline First make a line with start and end dates 1949 rounds to 1940 1962 rounds to 1970 First date isn’t in the timeline Then break the line into smaller sections Start timeline here Then place dates with important events on the timeline

First date is within the timeline Then break the line into smaller sections Then place dates with important events on the timeline

Let’s try some ourselves. Say our start date is 82 and our end date is 91. How would you round these numbers to the tens and still make sure they were included on the timeline? What about a start date of 20 and an end date of 29?
First: Making a line with a start and end date Step 3: Draw a line and place your start date on the left side, and your end date on the right side 1940 1970 First make a line with start and end dates Then break the line into smaller sections Then place dates with important events on the timeline
Then break the timeline into smaller sections Step 4: Find how many years there are between your start date and your end date -1970 End date - Start date 1940 Years in between Our timeline will span 30 years 30 Step 5: Find the factors of this number. Then choose one set of factor pairs to use. 2 segments Factors of 30: (5, 6), (3, 10), (2, 15) 15 years 3 segments 10 years First make a line with start and end dates 5 segments 6 years 6 segments 5 years 10 segments 3 years Then break the line into smaller sections Then place dates with important events on the timeline 15 segments 2 years
Then break the timeline into smaller sections Step 6: Break the timeline into sections, using one of the factors of the number of years between the start and end date. Our chosen factors: 3 and 10 (3 lots of 10 years) 1940 1960 1950 1970 Step 7: Label these years by using repeated addition. We are going up in lots of ten years, so we will use repeated addition with tens + 1940 10 1950 + 1950 10 1960 First make a line with start and end dates Then break the line into smaller sections Then place dates with important events on the timeline
Finally, place important dates along the timeline Step 8: Place your important dates along the timeline 1949 1940 1955 1950 1962 1960 Important dates: 1949 1955 1962 1970 First make a line with start and end dates Then break the line into smaller sections Then place dates with important events on the timeline
Creating a scale for a timeline Make a line with a start and end date Step 1: Identify your first and last important dates Step 2: Round these inclusively Step 3: Draw a line with your and label your start and end date Break the timeline into smaller sections Step 4: Find how many years there are between the start and end date Step 5: Find the factors of this number, and choose one set of factors Step 6: Break the timeline into sections, using one set of factors you identified Step 7: Label these sections using repeated addition Place important dates along the timeline Step 8: Place your important dates along the timeline using estimation Let’s try some together: 1951 - 1990 1845 – 1899 2000 – 2009 1948 - 1959
