Civilization �A civilization is the abilities, in which humans have developed a government, understand science, take part in culture, and have some source of industry.
The Epic of Gilgamesh (2700 BC) � The Epic of Gilgamesh contributed to civilization in the form of culture. The story was one of the first great literary works of the world.
King Ashurnasirpal II (870 BC) � This king held a feast that would last ten days. At this feast, he introduced wine as his drink of choice. This was the first time wine was seen as a drink of high class.
The Greeks (700 -600 BC) � Greek thinkers came up with the idea of democracy in this time period. Democracy is still used today as a form of government.
Thucydides (500 BC) � Thucydides is one of the ancient world’s great historians. Know for quote of, “peoples of the Mediterranean began to emerge from barbarism when they learnt to cultivate the olive and the vine. ”
Hesiod � Wrote a scientific book on how to properly harvest, prune, and plant vines. This lead the Greeks to take a scientific approach to improving agriculture.
Archestratus � Wrote the world’s first cookbook (Gastronomia). Also said the wine from Lesbos was the best wine.
Symposions (800 BC) � These were social parties that the guests drank at. It was the most sophisticated social gathering you could attend. This contributed to civilization because it showed the people taking part in common culture.
Euboulos � Wrote a play that was a big part of the culture in Greece. Talked about what each krater of win would do to a man and when to stop drinking if you were wise.
Eratosthenes � Famous Greek philosopher who shared ideas on wine. Believed that “Wine reveals what is hidden. ” This saying became part of the Greek culture and idea towards wine.
Plato (400 BC) a book called Laws. Also held the famous Plato’s Symposion. Main idea society took away from this was that you should drink wine in the pursuit of truth so you suffer no ill affects from it. Plato also set rules for symposions. � Wrote
Galen (170 BC) � Was one of the first people in the Roman Empire to use wine as a source of medicine. This scientific theory of wine helping heal wounds did many wonders for civilization.
Muhammed �A prophet of Islam. Went around teaching the Quran and telling stories about visions he received from Allah. Islam spread and became a huge religion in Arabia.
