Timeline of Emotions Purpose: to use a generating strategy to create a list of ideas for future writing *Instruct students to go to the next available blank page in the comp. book and write out the date on the upper left-hand side. *Turn the comp. book sideways and write “Timeline of Emotions” along the left hand column. *Invite students to the meeting area for the mini-lesson. **Begin mini-lesson with a connection: “So writers, at our last meeting, we talked about how good writers collect ideas and put them into a bank from which to draw. The more ideas, the better. So today I’m going to show you another generating strategy called ‘Timeline of Emotions’. ” Show the mood cards from the desk and pick an emotion. (See Sample #3. ) **Draw a timeline and chart all of times that emotion was felt. **Show students the Power. Point slide that lists many emotions. Instruct them pick an emotion and to go back to their seats and timeline it out. *If students get stuck, instruct them to choose another emotion and timeline it out. They can also pick an emotion that might not be listed on the Power. Point slide. *After 10 minutes of generating, instruct students to pick one moment and write an entry about it. The entry should be 15 minutes long.
