10 Components of a Thinking Environment - Nancy Kline 1. Attention – listening with respect and no interruptions – listen with fascination 2. Equality – ensuring equal terms to think and speak – do not only listen to some and not to others. 3. Ease – offering freedom from internal urgency, take time, be at ease 4. Incisive questions – finding and removing untrue assumptions that distort thinking 5. Information – should be shared and we should supply the facts 6. Diversity – encouraging divergent thinking and diverse group identities. This gives us a truer picture of reality 7. Encouragement – rather than compete we should rather encourage – give courage for cutting edge thinking by removing internal competition. 8. Feelings – allowing sufficient emotional release to restore thinking. Avoid toughening 9. Appreciation – practicing a 5: 1 ratio of appreciation to criticism (90: 1 in close relationships) 10. Place – Creating a physical environment that tells people “you matter”.
