Different ways of telling time in English Ø We use o’clock only at the full hour: 9: 00 It’s nine o’clock 11: 00 It’s eleven o’clock 7: 00 It’s seven o’clock
Ø We use “half past” to say thirty minutes , or 30 minutes past the hour. 1: 30 It’s half past one or It’s one thirty 2: 30 It’s half past two or It’s two thirty 7: 30 It’s half past seven or It’s seven thirty
Ø We use “to” to say times before the hour, from 31 minutes until the full hour 7: 50 It’s ten to eight 3: 35 It’s twenty five to four 3: 50 It’s ten to four Ø We use “past” to say times after the hour, until 30 minutes past the hour 3: 20 It’s twenty past three 3: 10 It’s ten past three 3: 20 It’s twenty past seven
ØWe use quarter past and quarter to say 15 minutes: A: Quarter past: 12: 15 It’s quarter past twelve 1: 15 It´s quarter past one 11: 15 It’s quarter past eleven B: Quarter to: 12: 45 It´s quarter to one 4: 45 It´s quarter to five 8: 45 It´s quarter to nine
Ø You can also tell the time in general like this way: 3: 05 7: 50 It`s three five 12: 45 It’s seven fifty It’s twelve forty five Ø When speaking about the different times of the day we often use: in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, at night 8: 00 am It’s eight o’clock in the morning 12: 15 pm It’s quarter past twelve in the afternoon 8: 30 pm It’s half past eight in the evening 11: 45 pm It’s quarter to twelve at night
