Lesson 1 - Guiding principles of time and self-management
Objectives Identify how to plan and control your workload Describe how to stay motivated to achieve tasks Recognize how to optimize the time available to you Summarize how to communicate effectively
Planning and controlling your workload Get your priorities straight. There will always be more work than you have time to complete. You aren’t going to get everything done. Accept it. Limit your time on tasks. The law of diminishing returns dictates that doing a certain task for an hour may be a good investment but spending five hours doing the same task may be time wasted. Make sure you do some tasks in limited quantities. Avoid perfectionism. Continuing to work on something long after the incremental effort stopped delivering value is not beneficial. Exercise discipline. You can’t afford to spend time doing things you enjoy at the expense of mission-critical tasks. Source: https: //www. entrepreneur. com/article/232618
How to stay motivated to achieve tasks Don't Assume Money Will Motivate You Make Sure They're Your Goals Visualize The Results Break The Goal Down Into Smaller Pieces. Tap Into Other People's Energy. Get Organized. Keep The Big Picture In Mind.

Communicate effectively Communicating effectively involves not only speaking well, but listening well, too. Active-listening tools, such as those in the following list, help you hold up your end of a successful conversation or discussion. Respond to requests by emphasizing what you can do to help meet them. Follow through and do what you say you’ll do. Listen without passing judgment and don’t rush in to give advice. When you have concerns, work them out with the source, not with others. Communicate with respect in every interaction regardless of whether you like the person. When others give you assistance or support, express appreciation for it.

It's due Monday, and it's Friday afternoon. Some of your work buddies asked you to leave early with them. Your employees are still at their desks working. What do you do? Your manager just sent over an urgent request for information. What do you do? You are invited to a meeting with the Operations team to provide input on a new project. You already have a meeting scheduled at that time with your employee. What do you do? Your director asked you to summarize the notes from an important and confidential meeting earlier that day. What do you do?
