What is a time adverb? A time adverb is a word that tells us when a verb happens. Words like today and yesterday could be used as a time adverb. We can also use them to sequence instructions. These are also sometimes called time words, or time connectives.
Time adverbs for instructions An adverb used to order instructions comes at the start of each instruction. Without a time adverb: Chop the wood. With a time adverb: First, chop the wood. This gives us an idea when we are doing this instruction. Chop is the imperative verb in the sentence, first is the time adverb. We are chopping the wood first.

In red, I have changed my time adverbs to be more interesting. Whilst secondly, thirdly and fourthly are adverbs, using them makes your writing less interesting. In blue, I have changed any capital letters and full stops I was missing or shouldn’t have been there. I also replaced my second ‘put’ with ‘place’ to make my writing more varied. In green, I corrected a spelling mistake. Did you spot all the mistakes?
