+ Tikal n Located in the Petén basin of Guatemala on the Yucatan Peninsula. n One of the best understood cities in the Mayan region, with a long list of dynamic rulers. n The earliest date recorded on the temple inscriptions was 1139 BC, when Tikal could have been a very small village on the Yucatan, although it is earlier than any archaeological evidence of humans on the site. (Harrison, 2000) n If this is the true date of the founding of Tikal, then its maintained memory until the 8 th century is truly remarkable. (Harrison, 2000)
