Thursday th 11 February Equivalent fractions
Equivalent Fractions. Some fractions that are written with different numbers have the same value. In other words, a fraction can be written in many different ways, but have the same value. We call these equivalent fractions. 1 2 2 4 Do you remember our very first lesson on fractions in which we folded a piece of paper in half and then another piece of paper of the same size into quarters? We found then that one half = two quarters. They are equivalent fractions.
Equivalent Fractions These are all equivalent fractions, even though they all have different numerators and denominators. They show that the same amount of the bar has been shaded overall. 1 4 2 8 3 12 4 16
Equivalent Fractions These fractions are all equivalent as they have the same value. 1 4 quarters 2 8 eighths 3 12 twelfths 4 16 sixteenths Each coloured bar extends the same distance so these fractions are equivalent.
Equivalent Fractions These 3 fractions are equivalent. They have the same value. What is each fraction? 1 3 2 6 3 9 Each coloured bar extends the same distance so these fractions are equivalent.
Equivalent Fractions What fractions are equivalent to 1 5 ? 1 5 2 10 3 15 Each coloured bar extends the same distance so these fractions are equivalent.
Make your own fraction wall. Use squared paper to make your own fraction wall for halves, quarters and eighths. You can print a sheet of squared paper from this week’s resources on the website. Your paper should be landscape. You need to draw a rectangle 24 squares across and 6 squares down and make your fraction wall as shown below, with 12 squares across for each half, 6 for each quarter and 3 for each eighth, with each fraction block 2 squares high. Draw the lines carefully! 1 2 1 4 1 8 1 8
Make your own fraction wall. Colour the halves in one pale colour, the quarters in another and the eighths in another. The colours need to be pale enough to write the fractions over the top. Then write the fractions over the top as shown. 1 2 1 4 In order to find fractions equivalent to ½, put your finger on the left hand side of the fraction wall, move it across to the line that shows where ½ comes up to. 1 8 1 8 1 8 1 4 1 4 1 8 1 4 1 2 1 8 Follow this line down to see how many quarters and eighths one half is equivalent to. 1 8 1 8 1 4 1 8 1 8 1 8
Now see if you can fill in these gaps. To work out what one half is equivalent to, follow the line at end of the one half segment to the quarters row to see how many quarters it is, or to the eighths row to see how many eighths it is. Then do the same with one quarter. 1 2 = 2 1 4 2 = 4 1 8 4 = 1 8 8 4 1 4 1 8 3 1 2 1 4 2 1 8 1 8 Can you spot any patterns in the numbers? 1 8 = 6 8
