THOSE WHO MAKE UP THE CHURCH TEXT: Eph 2: 1 -3: 21 OBJECTIVE: To learn who makes up the church OUTLINE: (1) (2) (3) (4) Those who were once lost, but now are saved (2: 1 -10) Jew and Gentile who have become reconciled (2: 11 -22) All people (3: 1 -13) A prayer for those in the church (3: 14 -21)
THE CHURCH IS MADE UP OF THOSE WHO WERE ONCE LOST, BUT NOW ARE SAVED (2: 1 -10) Ø The condition of those once lost (2: 1 -3) • They were dead in their sins (Is 59: 1 -2) • They lived like the world- driven by their desires (2: 2 -3) • They were by nature children of wrath
THE CHURCH IS MADE UP OF THOSE WHO WERE ONCE LOST, BUT NOW ARE SAVED (2: 1 -10) Ø How and why were they saved? (2: 4 -10) • Divine side- saved because of God’s mercy, love, grace, and kindness (v. 4 -7) • Human side- saved through their faith (v. 8)
THE CHURCH IS MADE UP OF JEW AND GENTILE WHO HAVE BEEN RECONCILED (2: 11 -22) Ø Their condition before they were saved. Strangers from the covenant and hopeless Ø The reconciliation came from Jesus (2: 13 -14) Ø The consequences of their reconciliation (v. 19 -22) • They had become citizens of the kingdom (2: 19, Col 1: 13 -14) • They became children of God’s household (v. 19)
THE CHURCH IS MADE UP OF ALL PEOPLE (3: 1 -13) Ø Rich and poor, male and female, Jew and Gentile, bond and free, black and white, educated and uneducated (Col 3: 11, Gal 3: 27 -28) Ø We are one in: • Purpose (3: 10 -11) • Promise (Gen 22: 15 -18) • Prophecy (Is 2: 1 -4) • Prospect (Mat 28: 18 -20)
THE CHURCH IS MADE UP OF ALL PEOPLE (3: 1 -13) Ø The church is the means by which the manifold wisdom of God was to be made known (3: 10 -13)
A PRAYER FOR THOSE IN THE CHURCH (3: 14 -21) Ø The address- To the Father (3: 14 -15) Ø The request- (3: 16 -19) (1) That they may be strengthened in the inner man by the Spirit (3: 16) (2) Jesus would indwell them through faith (3: 17) (3) That they be rooted and grounded in love (3: 17) (4) They would be able to comprehend the measurements of the Divine love (3: 18 -19) (5) That they be filled with all the fullness of God (3: 19)
LESSONS TO BE LEARNED FROM THE TEXT Ø We should learn to better appreciate the church (3: 10, 11, 21) Ø We can better understand the love of God • The width is seen in the fact that it reaches all man • The depth can be seen in that it reaches down to us in our worst sin
LESSONS TO BE LEARNED FROM THE TEXT Ø We are reassured that God can do anything (3: 20 -21) Ø We’re not under the Old Testament anymore (2: 14 -16) Ø The subject of reconciliation is explained (2: 13 -18) Ø That the doctrine of premillenialism is false (3: 10, 11, 21)
