Marbury vs. Madison!! 1803 n n Adams signed Judiciary Act of 1801 to add new judge positions; which he filled with Federalists. William Marbury, one of the judges sued the government to obtain his appointment papers. James Madison, Secretary of the State, followed Jefferson’s order & didn’t give him the papers Chief Justice John Marshall ruled that the Judicial Branch had NO authority to make the Executive Branch give Marbury
Barbary Wars (Video) May 1801 n n Map of the Barbary Wars n n Map of Pasha of Tripoli declares war with the US. President Jefferson refused to pay $225, 000 and the annual payment of $25, 000 for protection. On the 20 th Jefferson sent the first naval fleet and Marines to the area. 1803 – Jefferson faces much criticism for his decisions made regarding the war. The Philadelphia runs aground in the Tripoli Harbor and it crew and captain are taken captive.
Barbary Wars n n Realizing there was no way to n recapture the Philadelphia, US Commanders devised a plan to destroy the ship. February 4, 1804 the Philadelphia was destroyed. August 3, 1804 the first attack against Tripoli took place when the Constitution’s guns fired on the city. September 1804 – the final battle took place in the Tripoli Harbor June 4, 1805: The Pasha of Tripoli is replaced. A treaty was made with the United States and the prisoners were released. 1803 n n n Louisiana Purchase (Video) President Jefferson sent delegates to purchase New Orleans from France. Napoleon didn’t plan on selling any of New France but decided to sell the entire Louisiana Territory. (Livingston/Monroe signed treaty) The US paid $15 million for the land. (4 cents per acre) The purchase added 828, 00 square miles of land west of the Mississippi. (Land for Farming) July 4 the Louisiana Purchase is publicly announced.
