Some interesting facts about Gamelan… • There is a drummer who generally ‘leads’ the music, a bit like a conductor. • Gamelan music is generally in cyclic form - lots of repetition until a signal is given to stop. • There are usually about 15 -20 musicians and singers in a gamelan group • All musicians except singers sit on the floor and they must remove their shoes.

We have arrived in Africa but we are going to focus on the music of Ghana.
Listen to this example and try to work out the instrument you can hear playing…. A Ghanaian Drum Ensemble consists of a group of percussion instruments- drums, shakers and bells which are played together. They play for ceremonies, weddings, funerals, parties, and religious meetings. Often the music is performed sitting in a circle.
Drum ensembles are often led by a master drummer The master drummer leads the ensemble by playing signals that tell the other players to switch to a different section, change drum patterns, change the tempo, or end the piece. kpanglogo Brekete

The Steel band originates from Trinidad. After World War II many oil drums were left lying around. It was soon discovered that these oil drums could be tuned to make different notes and used to play music. These oil drum instruments are called ‘pans’.
Steel pans are made by cutting the oil drums into different sizes and then beating the tops into concave bowls, this forms the top of the ‘pan’. The head of the drum is hammered into flat panels which produce different sounds (or notes). Small rubberheaded sticks or beaters are used to strike each note.
These days steel bands consist of a number of different sized pans and a number of other percussion instruments. This picture shows the note positions on a pan. There a wide range of notes available on a steel pan therefore a steel band is a very versatile ensemble. Many different styles of music can be performed by a steel band e. g. traditional Caribbean music, pop and classical music. What’s the style? ? ? 1. 2. 3. 4.
The steel band is most commonly found outdoors playing traditional Caribbean music at carnivals and festivals.
Although steel bands originate from Trinidad it is popular across all of the West Indies Islands in the Caribbean. Each year a national championship competition is held in Trinidad to crown the best steel band from the Islands. Jamaica is not only famous for its bobsled team…it is also the home of Reggae music. Here it what it sounds like…. . Reggae is a music genre first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960 s, but its origins go back further than that. In the 1930 s and 1940 s, Mento and Calypso were two popular forms of music that were popular in Jamaica and the West Indies. Listen to one of the most famous examples of Calypso. This is the Banana Boat Song by Harry Belafonte
Reggae is most easily recognized by the rhythmic accents on the off-beat, usually played by guitar or piano (or both), known as the skank. This pattern accents the second and fourth beat in each bar to create a unique feel. We know Reggae music for its laid-back and off-beat sound. It is a very relaxed style of music with a slow steady tempo. Reggae bands are made up of instruments like guitars, bass guitars, drums and vocals.
Jamaican music truly came of age, reaching a global audience in the 70 s through the iconic power of Bob Marley When Bob left school his one ambition was music. Although he took a job in a welding shop, Bob spent all his free time taking guitar lessons. In 1962 Bob Marley auditioned for a local music manager. He released his first record: ‘Judge Not’. In 1963, he linked up with friends to form the Wailing Wailers.
In 1967 Bob's music reflected his beliefs, covering spiritual and social issues. His group changed its name to “The Wailers”. Reggae had never before been so popular, yet Bob Marley and The Wailers found themselves on the same level their rock band contemporaries, touring Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa, and having big hits in many countries across the globe. The Wailers’ hits included “I shot the Sheriff” (covered by many other artists), “No Woman, No Cry” and “Could you be loved”. As well as writing music, Bob Marley was a campaigner for peace and equality.

Gary Barlow and Andrew Lloyd Webber have co-created a song for the Queen’s Diamond jubilee called ‘Sing’ features musicians from across the commonwealth, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Gareth Malone and the Military Wives Choir and Prince Harry on the Tambourine. The inspiration for the song came from Prince Charles. Gary Barlow planned on simply using the London Philharmonic to record ‘Sing’ however after having a chat with Prince Charles realised this wasn’t enough. Prince Charles told Barlow “If you really want the Queen to like this, find people; go travel and find people”.
Barlows travels took him far and wide covering Australia, Kenya and the Solomon Islands as well as Jamaica and many others. Prince Harry made his contribution, which was his recording debut, in Jamaica one of the four commonwealth countries that Gary Barlow visited while compiling the song.
