- Slides: 15
This session includes lots of discussion points, sketching ideas, quick paper and pencil challenges that could be done by Year 6 in a bubble or at home and a game to practice the social skills of meeting new people at Secondary School. All the activities are inspired by phrases in the wonderful kind book about belonging and being kind, Here we are, by Oliver Jeffers. You don’t need the book to use the slides. To think about global belonging and kindness
In ‘Here we are’ Oliver Jeffers takes us as readers on a tour of Planet Earth. He wrote the book when his baby was born to introduce him to the things are most important to know. Here are some images https: //www. oliverjeffers. com/here-weare/ Here’s a reading of the book on you tube: https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v= c. PPQd. Dw. TUv. E

Oliver Jeffers talks about people coming in many shapes, sizes and colours but not to be fooled we are all people? This is such an important idea. Remember this as you get ready to go to your new school. People may be older, taller, new to you, have been to other primary schools … but don’t be fooled we are all people.
The game Invisible Similarities & Differences is such a good game to practice for meeting and talking to new people when you go to secondary school. In the game you ask questions until to find invisible things you have in common Is it a food, a book, a favourite place…? Then you ask questions to find out 3 invisible things that are different about you Do you like different books, food, games…? Have you got a few questions ready in your head…. . ?
Now work with a partner and talk to see what you can find out about each other: Invisible similarities Things we have in common Invisible differences Things that are unique about us
In the book Oliver Jeffers talks about us being kind to everyone. A 6 year old in the UK said this ‘If you are not kind to everyone then you are not kind. ’ Think about and write a list of the different ways we can be kind to: -Our family -Our friends -People we may not know well There are some ideas on the Kindness Calendar on the next slide that might help.
