INDEPENDENT TASKS • You are asked to speak on a specific given topic using your personal knowledge and experience. VS. INTEGRATED TASKS • For two tasks, you read short passages on the screen and listen to lectures or conversations about the passages through your headphones; • For the other two tasks you hear lectures and conversations; • You can take notes / you should NOT express your own opinion or bring in any extra information.
PREPARING YOUR RESPONSE • You have a short period of preparation time; • Analyse and make sure you understand what the question is asking you to do; • Write a simple (not complete) outline to follow; • DON’T read from your notes (you lose points). PRACTISING YOUR RESPONSE • It’s important that you practise by speaking into a computer microphone and recording yourself.
DELIVERING YOUR RESPONSE • Speak clearly and directly into the microphone; • Don’t speak too quickly or too slowly; • Avoid long pauses & saying “um” too many times; • Try to pronounce words carefully; • Pay attention to the on-screen clock and use it to adjust your timing; • You and other test takers will be recording at the same time: the headphones will block most of the sounds but you may hear them anyway. Focus on your own task and ignore the sounds around you. End
