2. 2 COMPONENTS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS Cardio-vascular Fitness Coordinative Abilities Strength Speed Components of Physical Fitness Endurance Flexibility Agility 11
2. 2 COMPONENTS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS 1. Speed a) It is performance pre-requiste to do motor action under given conditions. b) Speed appears in different forms in various sports. c) Speed development is done by practicing with a faster rhythm, repetition method & intensive interval method. 12
2. 2 COMPONENTS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS 2. Strength Ability to over come resistance. b) Facilitates the ability to resist disease as it affects organic efficiency. c) It is achieved by voluntary muscle contraction caused by the neuro -muscular speed. d) Exercising with sand bags , isometric exercise, weight lifting, push up etc. help in developing strength. a) 13
2. 2 COMPONENTS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS 3. Endurance a) Ability to resist fatigue. b) Various method for improving endurance are: Continuous method Repetition method Competition method Interval method 14
2. 2 COMPONENTS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS 4. Flexibility a) Capacity of a muscle to extend without any damage and range of movement at a joint. b) Muscles and ligaments can be stretched & can regain normal length without any adverse effect on the concerned tissues. c) Inter-relationship with other performance factors. d) Energy saving , as allows movement with minimum muscle tension & internal resistance. 15
2. 2 4. COMPONENTS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS Flexibility (cont. ) e. Helps in prevention of injuries. f. General Flexibility: Denotes flexibility of important joints of the body e. g. hip, shoulder, trunk. g. Special Flexibility: Ability to do sports movement with greater amplitude. h. Slow stretch, ballistic, hold methods improves flexibility. 16
2. 2 COMPONENTS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS 5. Cardio Vascular Fitness a) Develops and strengthen heart muscles and blood vessels. b) Individuals with CVF have slower pulse rate and greater buffering capacity to blood vessels & muscles which delays fatigue. c) Long distance running, swimming, trekking develops CVF. 17
2. 2 COMPONENTS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS 6. Coordinative Abilities a) To execute a sequence of movements smoothly and accurately b) It covers motor fitness and motor abilities. c) General Coordinative Ability : daily routine works like, eating food, walking, cycling etc. d) Specific Coordinative Ability : technical sports require highly developed coordinative abilities like rhythm, accuracy, constancy etc. e) Can be improved by regular physical 18 exercises.
2. 2 COMPONENTS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS 7. Agility a) Agility is the ability to be quick and graceful. b) Agility can be used for both mental and physical skills in speed and grace. c) Various drills and exercises for improving agility. 19
