Monday Project - Activity one There is a large period of time for which we have no written records and we call this ‘prehistory’. Starting from evidence of the first early humans, it is split into three sections: This week we are moving onto investigating the Iron Age: The Iron Age in Britain continued until the Roman invasion of AD 43. This period of time followed the Bronze Age, and by 500 BC, iron had replaced bronze as the chosen metal for making weapons and tools. Although the Iron Age didn’t properly begin in Europe until the 8 th century BC, the Hittites of Anatolia (part of modern day Turkey) are thought to have used the first iron in the 14 th century BC. This was followed by places such as ancient India and ancient Greece in the 12 th century BC. Question Time 1. 2. 3. 4. What period of History comes after the Bronze Age? When was the Roman invasion? In 500 BC, what important replacement was made? What was first used in 14 th Century BC?

Tuesday Project - Activity two Where Does Iron Come From? Iron ores are minerals

Tuesday Project - Activity two Where Does Iron Come From? Iron ores are minerals and rocks from which iron can be extracted. Back in the Iron Age, iron was extracted by a process known as ‘smelting’ using a charcoal-fired furnace. The iron ore and charcoal were put into the hot furnace, which melted off the waste material in the rock, leaving the iron behind as a big lump known as a ‘bloom’. The iron could then be heated and hammered into shape. What is smelting? In three sentences can you explain the process used with iron? 1. 2. 3.

Why Iron? Iron is tougher than bronze. It is shaped by being heated to a high temperature and then hammering it against an anvil. This process is known as ‘smithing’. The photo on the left shows a blacksmith hard at work. Why Iron? Compared to bronze, iron was considered easier to work with. It could be shaped into finer and sharper objects like spear heads, arrow heads, daggers and swords. Other sharp objects, such as a sickle hook, were used in farming to harvest grain crops. Can you write down a definition for ‘smithing’?

Wednesday: English – grammar Teaching slide and activity The simple past tense is used for things that have happened in the past and have finished. For example: He made a lot of money as a pirate. Wednesday Project - Activity Four The Celts The people living in Europe during the Iron Age are known as Celts. This culture continues to live on today within music and language. The Iron Age Celts are called this because they discovered iron and became great craftsmen who created weapons and household objects from this new metal. Before that, bronze was the main metal that items were made from. There would be a fire in the middle of the house, which was one large room, and the smoke escaped from a small hole in the roof. There were no windows, as they needed to keep the heat in. The roof was made from straw thatch.

Thursday Project - Activity Four Livelihood and Food The Celts were mainly farmers. They grew corn, gathered berries, nuts, plants and hunted animals. They ate deer, bear, wild boar and fish. They collected honey and eggs. They kept cows, pigs, goats and sheep. A farmer had to be ready to defend his land fight when he had to! The Celts loved brightly coloured clothes. They wore woollen clothing which they dyed with natural dyes. They used the juice from berries and plants, and wove the wool using a loom. They used metal or bone needles to sew pieces together. The women wore skirts or dresses to the floor, with a cloak pinned with a brooch. The men wore T-shaped tunics with a belt and trousers. Write down three interesting facts you have found out so far this week about the Iron Age.

Friday : English – writing Using the information you are investigated this week, along with the WAGOLL and key words, you will write your own diary entry in the life of an Iron Age Celt. Dear Diary, Today has been a tiring day, as I have slaved over the anvil to shape new weapons for the soldiers. I suppose I should be more grateful, as my father always told me that iron is much easier to work with than bronze. After sculpting arrow heads, daggers and swords, I safely returned home to see that the fire was already burning in the centre of the house. Not having windows made the house toasty and cosy, so it was warm enough to get changed out of my work clothes. Once I had pulled on my tunic and held up my brightly coloured trousers up with a belt, I raced down to the lake to enjoy an animal sacrifice which we hope will bring luck to our tribe.
