This is my library – A personal tour in print The purpose of this book is to help pre-teach what the structure and routine of a library experience will be like. With this book, individuals will gain a visual familiarity of their own library so that they can feel comfortable during their visits, be able to use the services, and interact appropriately. This project was made possible by a contract with INFOLINK: The Eastern New Jersey Regional Library Cooperative. The Cooperative and its services are funded by the New Jersey State Library, which is responsible for the coordination, promotion and funding of the New Jersey Library Network. 2
This is the front door to the South Brunswick Public Library: This is my library, The South Brunswick Public Library. We come to the library for information, entertainment and special events. Here I will find books, movies, and music to take home and enjoy, information for research, and programs and services in which I can participate. 3
My library has rules: I need to pay attention to the library’s rules. The rules tell me how I should behave in the library. The rules help me to be considerate of other people’s needs. One rule asks me to walk, not run and another rule asks me to use my indoor voice. 4
This is the friendly Children’s staff at my library: The Children’s staff members plan library programs and develop the book, movie and music collection for the Children’s Department. They are able to help me if I have problems using the library. They can teach me how to find books and information and use the resources that are here for me. 5
This is how I know who works at my library: This badge identifies someone who works in my library. If I need help I should ask someone for help who is wearing a badge like this one. They can help me find the books or services I am looking for. 6
These are the times I can use my library: Library Hours Sunday 1 p. m. – 5 p. m. Monday 10 a. m. – 9 p. m. Tuesday 10 a. m. – 9 p. m. Wednesday 10 a. m. – 9 p. m. Thursday 10 a. m. – 9 p. m. Friday Noon – 6 p. m. Saturday 10 a. m. – 5 p. m. There are specific days and times I can use my library. Ask a staff member for a copy of the library schedule. 7
This is where I might find a book I want: My library is separated into sections. There are books and information in different areas and different topics for children, teens and adults. My library staff can help me find the location of the item I am looking for. 8
This is how I find a book at my library: I can look for books, movies, and music in my library’s computerized catalog. I can search by title, author, keyword, or subject. I can do this on a computer in the library or on a computer from home. 9
This is what a library card looks like: This is what my library card looks like. Having a library card lets me checkout things like books, movies, and music. There are rules about getting and using a library card. A staff member can tell me more about getting a library card and how to use it. 10
This is the Check-Out Desk at my library: The Check-Out desk is the place I can use my library card to borrow or renew books and other items from the library. My library has rules about which items can be borrowed and when to return them to the library. My library also has rules about how I should care for the items I borrow while I have them. 11
This is how I can borrow books from my library: To borrow books and other library materials, I need to give my library card and items I have chosen to the person at the Check-Out Desk. The staff person will scan the items into the computer and then return the items to me and tell me when I need to return them to the library. I can also use the Self Check-Out machine to borrow books. 12
This is how I return a borrowed library item: This is a drop box. It is where items I have borrowed from the library can be returned. I just pull the handle towards me to open and then gently drop the items I had borrowed in and then gently close. The items I had borrowed are now returned. My library has drop boxes inside as I enter and outside the library building. I need to return the items I borrow by the due date on my receipt. A staff member will give me a receipt with the due date for each item I borrow at the Check-Out desk. 13
This is the Information Desk at my library: My library also has an Information Desk. I can go here to ask questions of the reference librarian. The reference librarian and the reference books can help me to answer questions I have and to do research. The reference librarian can also help me to find the location of the items I need. 14
I can print information at my library: There are several printers around the library. I have to pay 10 cents for each print I make. After I print out the pages I want, I need to go to the Check-Out desk or the Information Desk and pay for the pages I have printed. I can ask a library staff member if I need help. 15
I can make photocopies at my library: There is one photocopier. It is located next to the Check-Out desk. I have to pay 10 cents for each copy or print I make. I insert the dime into the machine where indicated before I can make my copy. I can ask a library staff member if I need help. 16
This is a quiet place to read or study: There are places in my library I can go to do my work quietly. My librarian can help me find them. I should always be respectful of others who are reading or studying quietly so I do not disturb them. 17
This is where I can quietly work on the computer: At my library there are places where I can work quietly on the computer. I can play games or do research or work with my family on the computer. If I have a problem with my computer I can ask a staff member for help. If I need to use headphones I can ask to borrow them from a librarian at the Information Desk. 18
These are the bathrooms in my library: A staff member can help me to find where the bathroom is located. The bathroom is there for me to use if I need to. It is inappropriate to use the bathroom for other activities than my personal care and hand washing. I should let a library staff member know if I have special needs. I should always respect a person’s privacy in the bathroom. 19
