Climate Change Likely Future trends in Hertfordshire 2041 -60 (low to medium scenario): • Daily max summer temp: 3 to 6 degree rise over 30 yr mean • 5 day winter rain accumulation : 6 to 13 mm over 30 yr mean • Max summer typically 30°C. Hottest day around 35°C. Longer heatwaves • Increase extreme events drought / flood/ wind/ snow? • Water Abstraction demand: 150 to 200% of current (UK Cttee on Climate Change Risk Assessment 2017)

Climate Change • Climate Change Act set UK emissions reduction 80% by 2050 (1990 base) • UK has achieved 35% cut but heading off track • Domestic/commercial emissions will need further year on year 3% drop • So significant action needed • Adds to pressure on price

Fuel Costs • Generally upward price rise in all fuel types over time • Some stability this year • But is this about to change? • Significant rises still looking likely next year

What? • Need to take stock • Review your energy use • Look to the future “If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage or improve it. ”

How? • • Audit your energy use Take regular meter readings (Smart? ) Assess overnight energy use Check your tariff! Off gas? Oil club Benchmark & seek advice Remember the energy hierarchy: – Switch off and save – Tariff/ Insulate/ equipment efficiency – Then consider alternative energy

Heating • • • Do you have effective/any controls? Check timings Effective insulation Reduce thermostat by 1 degree Check system balanced Weather dependant time switches Modern boilers – now 90% efficient TRV’s App based control Cooling?

Hot Water • Hot water – set to 60 degrees – check timings – aim for water to run out at end of day – smaller cylinder/ instantaneous? – even the tea urn!

Lighting • Assess wattage and needs • Any incandescent bulbs? • Fluorescent good (T 12/T 8/T 5), but LED much better – 50% less energy/ 5 -10 times longer (reduced maintenance) /3 -7 yr pay back • Use PIRs for infrequent areas • Costly Flood lighting? - switch to LED

Insulation

Insulation • Loft insulation: £ 5/m 2 = 1 -2 yrs • Cavity wall insulation: £ 5/m 2 = 2 -3 yrs • Suspended Floor insulation: £ 5 -£ 10/m 2 = 5 -10 years • Flat roof insulation (internal/external): Expensive and often best done as part of roof refurbishment £ 15/m 2 = 15+yrs • Solid wall internal/external: £ 20/£ 45 per m 2 =12 -20 yrs • Double Glazing : Generally only cost effective when replacing old windows £ 250+/m 2 = 20+years • Tank jackets/pipes/draught proofing: always makes sense

Look to the future • Renewables - costs falling; - range of technologies inc solar; heat pumps; biomass and micro CHP • Battery storage – perhaps the next big thing? • EV charging hubs

Grants Carbon Trust: Green Business Fund • Up to £ 10, 000 to put towards the purchase and installation of energy efficient equipment • Expected savings must exceed project costs in 5 years max • Must have charitable status • Equipment should be purchased from Green Business Directory supplier East Herts Council • Community Capital Grants • Leaf Grants ACRE • Rural Community Buildings Loan Fund (Loans up to £ 20 K)

Community Energy • Government 2015 Community Energy Strategy • Collective action to reduce, purchase, manage & generate energy • Emphasis on local engagement, community control, local benefits • 3 aims: • Maintain energy security/tackle climate change • Saves people money. • Encourages wider social/economic benefits inc community cohesion

Community Energy Locally: • Herts CE network to bring groups together • Work with schools to promote concept • 310 possible community assets for PV in East Herts = possible 119, 000 k. W generating potential • Hertford Energy Now – 3 schemes@ Mill Meads; Hunsdon; Morgan schools

A decade of growth • In 2005 fewer than 20 community energy projects • Now 30 x that number! • In Germany c. 65% of its huge renewable energy capacity is community-owned. • UK community ownership is less than 10% Total share of electricity generation from renewables over 25%
