Analysis of Participating Institutions experts were compiled onto the GTTS list from 463 hundreds of institutions across the globe What was found? Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa had the lowest rates of participation ● 27, 34, and 18 participants respectively at the 2016 -2019 Global Summits. ● Participants were also from the same institutions the team targeted these regions and identified 5 0 key staff members from top institutions in the regions and added them to the 2020 invite list

Impact of Technological Advancement TELEMEDICINE & CONTACT TRACING Both raise significant privacy concerns but are being employed internationally as a response to the COVID pandemic SOCIAL MEDIA AND DISINFORMATION "Fake news, " coupled with technology like troll farms and deep fakes, has eroded public confidence in traditional sources of information. In many discourses there ceases to be a set of agreed upon facts. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE The GTTS has tracked AI development for several years now, as it has the potential to significantly influence the face of Sources: (CDC, 2020), (Turner-Lee, Karsten, & Roberts, security, business, and personal 2020), (Reuters, 2018) relationships.

Populism A political approach that strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups

Populism 22% of the world population is populist, jumping as high as 40 percent in countries with recent political upheaval such as Brazil and Ukraine. The election of Donald Trump, the Brexit vote, and increasing isolationism are recent examples of growing populism. POPULISM IS A REACTION AND AN OPPOSITION TO GLOBALIZATION Why populism has succeeded as an ideology opposed to a globalized world? the Great Recession of 2008, a failure to control widespread migration, and growing economic inequality along educational and geographical lines Increase of far right parties that oppose the International Human Rights Movement, collective organizations such as the EU and the UN, and laws that allow for increased movement and liberalism POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES OF POPULISM backsliding of global economic activity xenophobia and limited migration isolationism end of neoliberalism inability to keep up with dramatic technological change Sources: (Jordi, 2017), (Galston, 2018), (Schoen, 2019)

Vulnerable Population s MIGRANTS Worsening conditions for 70 million forcibly displaced people—including refugees, asylum seekers, IDPs, and other forced migrants. MINORITIES HUMANITARIAN CRISES Disproportionate exposure, risk, and consequences for minority communities during the pandemic. Methodology Research: ● Analyzed past summit reports to identify transregional trends ● Researched the recent key initiatives of top think tanks ● Reviewed relevant literature and news articles on distinct 2020 issues ● Synthesize literature on the identified trends Logistics and Invite Lists: ● Reviewed Past Participant Lists ○ Identified repeat attendees ○ Tallied the amount of attendees from each country/region ● Targeted new individuals and institutions that focus on the critical issues the summit is trying to address ○ Drafted panel proposals on these issues with panelist proposals ● Added executive staff from top think tanks in targets regions to the list ● Used TTCSP’s regional databases to update and compile contact info for invitees

Additional Themes: Global Think Tank Town Halls ● Many of the issues identified were raised in the virtual Global Think Tank Town Halls ○ Breakout Group Topics: 1) The Public Health Crisis 2) National and International Economic Recovery Strategies 3) Innovative and Inclusive Intervention Public and Private Strategies to Help Vulnerable Groups 4) Fostering International Cooperation 5) Fit for Uncertain Future -New Operating Models for Think Tanks Research, Communications and Funding ● The Global Town Hall themes will continue to be tracked and likely examined through a regional lense in the fall 2020 virtual Global Summit

Conclusions The 2021 summit in Bahrain will be a critically important gathering for think tanks and top thought leaders. The summit, as well as the 2020 virtual summit preceding it, will draw a geographically diverse group of hundreds of think tanks. 2020 has given rise to a variety of newer issues that have not yet been covered by past Global Summits. Specifically, international health (COVID-19), youth activism, and safeguarding vulnerable populations will be likely be important topics for summit programming.
