SOCIAL ISSUES o Digital Divide- gap between digital haves and have-nots (Duffy p. 354) o Cyberbullying- an incident when the Internet, cell phones, or other devices are used to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person (NCPC 2009) o Online Social Interaction- interacting socially through the Internet (Duffy p. 356) Online Social Interaction Digital Divide Cyberbullying
ETHICAL ISSUES o Freedom of Speech- an ethical issue that can arise o when Internet content is regulated such that it may restrict the constitutionally guaranteed right to free speech (Duffy p. 358) o Privacy vs. control and monitoring: - everyone has the right to individual rights and privacy Freedom of Speech - things that people are doing while on the Internet can be technologically monitored, should this be allowed? - Schools: safety of the students - sign pledges o Academic dishonesty -Are students being honest? LEGAL ISSUES o Copyright and fair use: - Teachers should become familiar with the TEACH Act o Privacy: - Students have a right to privacy - Teachers need to know how to protect their students Copyright and Fair Use when using the Internet - Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) o ADA Compliance: Internet made accessible o Acceptable Use- issues surrounding the use of technology in a manner that protects students from inappropriate behaviors and information (Duffy p. 352) o Software piracy- copying software to share with others or installing software on multiple machines when only one copy was purchased (Duffy p. 353) Privacy Acceptable Use
