OPENING: EXPOSITORY WRITING Informational (sometimes called expository) writing seeks to inform about a topic. You are not trying to change anyone’s mind or convince them to do something- that is argumentative writing. Typical Informational Essay Outline- 5 paragraphs: 1 Opening Paragraph Hook, background information on topic, thesis statement 3 Body Paragraphs Topic sentence, supporting details, conclusion sentence 1 Closing Paragraph Rephrase thesis, explain importance of topic, summarizing statements
YOUR INFORMATIONAL SPEECH Your speech will be between 3 -4 minutes. You will not have time for three body paragraphs. You will need to have: One opening paragraph Two body paragraphs One closing paragraph
THESIS STATEMENT The most important part because it gives your writing a clear direction
WHAT IS A THESIS STATEMENT? The thesis statement is one sentence that states the topic of a writing assignment. It also briefly mentions the main ideas that will be explained about the topic in the body paragraphs. It appears at the end of the opening paragraph.
STRONG THESIS STATEMENTS A strong thesis statement answers the prompt or question. What are you writing about? Inform your classmates about a current human rights issue happening in the world. It should be concise- short and to the point. It is not a question, it is a clear, declarative statement. It should not contain specific facts, like numbers or statistics. Those facts will be used later in your writing, as supporting details!
Your thesis statement should mention 1. ) the abused human right, 2. )any specific places or peoples you will be talking about, 3. ) the two main ideas that you will be discussing in your body paragraphs
EXAMPLES Weak Thesis Examples: Sometimes, kids don’t get to go to school. In Iran, the horrible government hates kids with disabilities. What is a human rights issue in the world? Iranian children with disabilities. During the 2018 -2019 school year, only 150, 000 out of an estimated 1. 5 million Iranian children with disabilities of school age were enrolled in school. Explains human rights issue Strong Thesis Examples: Iranian children with disabilities are denied their right to an education because of social prejudices and poor funding. Identifies specific people/place Briefly mentions two supporting main ideas that will be explained in body paragraphs Due to social prejudices and a lack of government regulation, Iranian children with disabilities are denied educational rights.
