Thermal Hair Straightening
Pressing • Temporarily Straightens curl or unruly hair by means of a heated iron or comb • Generally lasts until shampooed • Press prepares the hair for additional services • A good hair press leaves the hair in good lustrous condition; it is not harmful to the hair • Chemically relaxed hair should NOT be pressed

Thermal Hair Straightening • Three Types – Soft Press • Removes about 50 -60% of the curl • Accomplished by pressing 1 x on each side of the hair – Medium • Removes about 60 -75% of the curl • Accomplished by pressing 1 x on each side of the hair using slightly more pressure – Hard • Removes 100% of the curl • Achieved by applying thermal pressing comb twice on each side of the hair
Analysis of Scalp • 1 st need to assess the condition of the hair and scalp • A careful analysis should cover: Wave Pattern Length Texture (fine, medium, or coarse Feel (wiry, soft, or silky) Elasticity Color Condition of the hair (normal, dry, brittle, oily, damaged, or chemically treated – Condition of the scalp (normal, flexible, or tight) – – – –

Abuse or Neglect • If the client shows signs of abuse or neglect caused by: – Faulty pressing – Lightening – Tinting **You should recommend a series of conditioning treatments!! *Failure to correct this damage can result in breakage during pressing!
Scalp Condition • Client’s scalp can be classified as: – Tight • If tight scalp and coarse hair, press the hair in the direction the hair grows – Flexible • Remember to use enough tension to press the hair satisfactorily – Normal • Proceed with analysis of hair texture and elasticity

Conditioning Treatments • Important to offer clients effective conditioning treatments, thorough brushing and scalp massage • Massage and Brushing help to stimulate better circulation and make the scalp more flexible! • A bonus for clients who receive thermal pressing!

Thermal Straightening Comb • Good quality brass or stainless steel • Handles usually wood • Wood does not absorb as much heat • Space between teeth varies; close spaced teeth: smooth press • wide teeth; less smooth
Conventional Pressing comb and Stove
Heating the Comb • May be heated in an electric or gas stove – When heating in a gas stove, make sure the teeth are faceup – Keep the handle away from the fire • After heating the comb, test on piece of light paper – If the paper scorches, wait for the comb to cool before placing it on the hair
Procedure • Shampoo • Re-drape • Thoroughly dry hair to prevent smoking and burning during pressing • Apply pressing oil • Section into quadrants; press according to texture and style; temple comb can be used at nape and temples area: moderately warm in these areas • Curl if client requests it • Gentian Violet jelly: For burns

Cleaning the Comb • Comb will perform more efficiently if kept clean • Wipe the comb before and after every use to remove: – Loose hair and clinging dirt – The combs intense heat keeps it sterile • Stove heated comb – Remove the carbon by: • rubbing the outside surface and between the teeth with fine steel wool pad or • Place the metal portion in a hot baking soda solution for about 1 hr • Rinse and dry the comb thoroughly • Metal will be smooth and shiny again
Pressing Cream or Oil • Prepare the hair before pressing • Benefits are: – Makes hair softer – Prepare and condition the hair for pressing – Help protect the hair from burning or scortching – Help prevent hair breakage – Condition the hair after pressing – Add sheen to hair – Helps hair stay pressed longer!
