Theres not a minute to lose October 2004
There’s not a minute to lose… October 2004 Domestic Violence Awareness Month Activities
Why have a Domestic Violence Awareness month? • Because one in three adult women experience at least one physical assault by a partner during adulthood (American Psychiatrists Association) • Because the costs of intimate partner rape, physical assault, and stalking exceed $5. 8 billion each year, nearly $4. 1 billion of which is for direct medical and mental health care services. The total costs of IPV also include nearly $0. 9 billion in lost productivity from paid work. (Centers for Disease Control, “Costs of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women in the United States, ” April 2003) • Because we can raise awareness and hope
What’s going on? • Daily news stories in the Arizona Republic • Over 200 awareness packets mailed out to local employers • A training forum for hospitality and retail employers • Weekly presentations for the general public at area hospitals • An education panel discussion at ASU West • Domestic Violence Awareness Day and Proclamation Signing with Governor Napolitano
How can YOU get involved? • Participate in training sessions • Attend the kick-off presentation on September 30 th and other presentations throughout October • Distribute material at the workplace • Host speakers at your workplace or organization • Wear a purple ribbon • Support someone who has been through domestic violence • Commit to participate in April’s Walk to End Domestic Violence
