Theme Review: THEME The meaning or concept we are left with after reading a particular text. The author’s underlying message about life, relationships, the human condition. No clichés please!! Example: Education opens people’s eyes. When they gain education and are exposed to new experiences, they are likely to rebel against the injustices they see in society. Non-example: The witches predict Macbeth will be king, so he rebels against King Duncan.

Theme 1. Gaining and Maintaining power: Where is the line between ambition and corruption for Macbeth? Consider: Macbeth’s rise to power and the constant battle for titles and the crown. 2. 2. Fate versus self-will: Do people control their own destiny? How is this portrayed in the play? Things to consider: The role of the witches and supernatural, power of suggestion, and can Macbeth change the prophecies? 3. Masking true intentions: How are characters duplicitous (two-faced, false) and what are the results? Things to consider: When are characters lying? When are characters betraying others, acting two-faced, putting on a show? 4. Conscience will prevail: One cannot run from the guilt of an evil act. How do the characters’ guilt catch up to them? How do the characters respond to feelings of guilt in different ways? Consider: Macbeth’s hallucinations as a form of his conscience. Lady Macbeth’s madness (Acts IV/V).
